https://urbanfarm.lpages.co/urban-farming-ebook/ Greg Peterson created www.urbanfarm.org from a passion for Urban Farming.

This passion grew as he created 'The Urban Farm' in Phoenix, Arizona, on 1/3 of an acre where he planted 70+ fruit trees. There, and online, Greg educates and empowers people to plant their own! Through this entity he offers food-growing related classes both online and in-person, as well as events to promote fruit trees and vegetable seeds combined with topic related education. learn how: (http://

I signed up for a permaculture course expecting garden tips. I got three things instead.

1. A way of thinking that works on everything.
How water moves, how money moves, how my week moves. The course names what I already sensed and puts it in order. That part alone rearranged more than my yard.
permaculture.net

2. A room full of people already doing the work.
Someone two seats over has already killed the tree I was about to plant. Learning goes faster next to them.
permaculture.net

3. A shift from making things last to making things rebuild.
A yard that feeds the soil while it feeds me.

34 years in and I still run the design process on stuff that has nothing to do with plants. The Phoenix Permaculture design course early registration ends today. See the first post for more information to register

Your fruit tree needs to eat every day, but you only feed it three times a year.

I did the same thing for years. Fertilizer in spring, maybe again in summer, called it care.

But a tree doesn't eat on my schedule. It's pulling food from the soil every single day, and in this heat it needs more, not less.

So I shifted how I feed them. Granular fertilizer four times a year to build a steady foundation in the soil. Then a liquid fertilizer drench twice a month to keep nutrients flowing in between. The granular breaks down slow and feeds over time. The liquid gets in fast and fills the gaps.

Together, that's a schedule the tree can actually count on. Three visits a season, especially in this heat, was never going to keep up. Sign up for a free fruit tree classes in the first comment

The system fed you fine until it didn't.

2008. 2020. Shelves emptied while backyards sat idle.

The folks who could already read their land stayed calm. I watched it happen both times.

That skill comes from one place I trust: a Permaculture Design Course. 72 hours, in person, built for our Southwest drylands. Water harvesting, soil, reading how energy moves through a site. You leave with a full design for a property you choose.

Weekends only, so your day job survives.

Our Spring 2027 PDC in Phoenix is open, and the biggest early bird discount, $300 off, ends in 5 days. A $250 deposit locks it in.

Class size is small on purpose. Come learn to work with nature. Link for more info in the first comment

I have planted fruit trees in Phoenix since 1975.

Fifty summers of 110+ degree afternoons taught me one thing no book did. The tree does not die from heat. It dies from where I made it stand in the heat.

For years I answered summer the way the nursery told me to. More water. It kept trees alive, barely, and I paid for it every single week.

The trees that thrived were the ones standing in a cool spot I built before planting. Shaded ground. Plants around the base cooling the soil and feeding it at the same time. East side of the house instead of that west wall that cooks all afternoon.

Well, cooling the ground. That took me embarrassingly long to figure out. The air is hot everywhere. The roots only care about the dirt.

Design the spot first. Then plant. Even if it is a hot spot we can teach you how to cool it down.

My free classes on all of this are at fruittrees.org, link in the first comment.

Your fruit tree died because nobody told you the boring part.

The tree was fine. Your thumb is fine too.

What killed it happened before you even got home. Wrong variety for our climate, wrong spot picked out, wrong hole. Five minutes of setup that the store selling you the tree never mentions.

I made the same buy years ago. Followed the tag, watered it like it said. Watered it wrong, actually, I learned that part later.

Once you know the few right choices up front, a tree in a small yard can feed you for decades. The knowledge takes a couple hours to learn. The tree outlives you.

Join me for the month of September as we give a series of free zoom classes on how to grow fruit trees in the desert. The link is in the first comment. ๐ŸŒณ
