If your team is burned out, you don't have a performance problem. You have a regulation problem.

My POV (20 years in corporate + HR leadership): most workplaces try to "motivate" people out of nervous system overload. That's like yelling at a smoke alarm.

Tool (for leaders, 3 minutes): The fear-signal check.
Before you correct, coach, or escalate, ask:

1) Is this person flooded (fast speech, defensiveness, shutdown)?
2) What would "safety" look like in this moment (clarity, choice, time, support)?
3) What's ONE next step we can agree on today?

Example: "Lets pause. What's the smallest deliverable you can commit to by 3pm? And how can I support you today?"

Your body isn’t being dramatic.
It’s giving you data.

My point of view (from trauma-informed work and lived experience): when you ignore the first 3 signals, your nervous system will send a louder message.
Then we call it “falling apart.”

Tool (do this today): name the first signal, out loud.

Example script: “My chest is tight. That means I need a break to explore what is causing me anxiety, fear or overwhelm.”

Then do 60 seconds of longer exhales: inhale 4, exhale 6–8.

If you’re waiting to feel confident before you act, you’re going to be waiting a long time.

My POV: confidence is a byproduct of safety.
When your nervous system doesn’t feel safe, you don’t “need” a pep talk. You need a reset.

Tool (60 seconds): “Name + exhale.”
Say out loud: “I’m safe enough to take one next step.”
Then do 5 slow exhales (longer than your inhales).

Example: before you send the email, before you set the boundary, before you hit “publish.”

My POV: shutdown is a survival strategy. It's what your body does when it's been carrying too much for too long.

Tool (90 seconds): Orienting.
Look around the room and name:
- 5 things you can see
- 4 things you can feel (feet in shoes counts)
- 3 things you can hear
~ Take a deep, cleansing breath

Example: do this before you scroll, before you pour the second coffee, before you pick a fight with your own life.

Myth: “If I just push harder, I’ll get my life back.”

Hard truth: pushing is how you stay stuck.
When your system is already maxed out, more force just creates more resistance.

Reframe: regulated action beats motivated action.

Tool (right now): “The 4-point reset.”
1) Put both feet on the floor.
2) Press your tongue to the roof of your mouth.
3) Exhale like you’re fogging a mirror for 6 seconds.
4) Ask your body what it needs to feel balanced. A walk, some water, a snack, a break, to talk to someone? Then do it.

Example: do it before you walk into the meeting, before you talk to your partner, before you open your laptop.

My POV: when you’re dysregulated, everything feels urgent and nothing feels doable. That’s not laziness. That’s biology.

Tool (2 minutes): “Brain dump + choose one.”
1) Write every single thing spinning in your head (no organizing).
2) Circle ONE item you can finish in 10 minutes.
3) Set a timer. Finish it. Stop.

Example: “Reply to the email with ONE sentence: ‘Got it. I’ll confirm by 3pm.’”

My point of view: confidence is a nervous system outcome.
It’s what shows up AFTER you take one aligned action while your body is still loud.

Tool (do this today): pick ONE 10-minute action that proves self-trust.

Example:
Send the email.
Close the tab.
Walk outside.
Drink water.
Put the shoes on.
Book the appointment.
Then stop. Let your system learn, “I can do hard things without spiraling.”

No.
That’s how you end up hating your job AND hating yourself.

Here’s what I’ve seen in 20 years of corporate leadership and HR: burnout doesn’t respond to pressure.
It responds to truth.

Tool (do this today): write one sentence you’ve been avoiding.
Journal prompt: “What am I pretending isn’t hurting me?”

Example: “I’m not tired. I’m resentful.”
Or “I’m not overwhelmed. I’m under-supported.”

Name it, then choose one 10-minute action that supports you (not your fear).
