South Mountain Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) successfully completed their Honors in Action (HIA) work with the Percy L. Julian School (PLJ) mentorship initiative, which was supported by the Blackstone LaunchPad.
In the mentorship program, SMCC PTK members worked with 20 eighth-grade students from the Roosevelt School District through four different sessions to help with storytelling, college readiness, career exploration, leadership development and future visioning. PTK mentors also shared personal educational journeys to help students see college success as attainable and relatable.
The program concluded with a visualization activity where students dressed as graduates and took graduation-style photos to help envision themselves as future college students and professionals. The students were also invited to attend the SMCC Commencement Ceremony on May 15.
