💡How has AVID positively impacted you?
AVID has positively impacted me by being more organized,having better communication with my peers, and has made me a great student.
💡What strategies do you use to be successful in classes?
Strategies I use to be successful is writing in my agenda every day and being organized.
💡What motivates you to be successful?
Things that motivate me to be successful is my friend and my mom. They always tell me to not be so hard on myself and just to try my best, they don’t expect me to get perfect grades as long as I try my best they are happy with me.
💡What are your future Career/College plans?
My future Career is to be a fashion designer and hopefully I get to have my own fashion company.

🌟🍎Congratulations to Emily Hanson for winning one of two spots for November's Teacher of the Month!!🍎🌟

Emily Hanson teaches 10th Grade English and Film Appreciation at Western School of Science and Technology. She is also the Student Council Sponsor.

Emily graduated from MSU Denver in 2020 with her Elementary Education degree and a minor in Mathematics. Shortly after, Emily moved to Arizona so her husband could attend law school at ASU. Western is Emily’s first teaching job.

Emily attributes her love of teaching to her family, where she is the tenth person to pursue a career in education.

In her free time, Emily enjoys collecting and playing board games with her husband Conner, tending to her many plants, crafting, and spending time with her dogs, Yogi Bear and Boo-Boo Bear Hanson.

Having worked with all age groups from birth through college and with over 21 years of experience, and a proud mother of three successful, beautiful adult children, Ms. Crawford has a breadth of knowledge and expertise that ranges from K-12, adult learning, and community building.

Her educational mantra is “To impact a child, you must impact a family.” When she is not volunteering at church or in the community, she’s enjoying sporting events; especially, football. Ms. Crawford also takes pleasure in comedy shows, music, shopping, walking and traveling.

🌟🍎Throw back to October when Sofia Sabino won Staff of the Month!!🍎🌟

Sofia Sabino is the Discipline Assistant and parent liaison and assists the School Social Worker from time to time. Sofia also helps run Cafecito with the help of Ms. Barajas. Sofia’s goal this school year is to increase parents’ participation at Western and educate parents about the resources that our Maryvale Community partners provide.
Sofia enjoys being outdoors when the weather allows it, her favorite place to visit with her husband and two children is Sedona. Sofia enjoys being surrounded by her family, good music, and good food. Sofia loves rainy days, plants, long walks, and watching “Friends”.

🌟🍎Throw back to October when James Brenner won Teacher of the Month!!🍎🌟

James Brenner is the current AP English Literature teacher at WSST. In 2021, he graduated from Indiana University Bloomington with a degree in Political Science. Then, he earned his Masters in Secondary Education from Arizona State University while also teaching full time. James loves providing meaningful learning experiences for his students. One of his proudest achievements is founding the student literary magazine on campus Warrior Voices. In his free time you can find him playing guitar, hiking, reading non-fiction, writing poetry, or dunking on people in his recreational basketball games.

🌟🍎Throw back to September when Amparo Barajas won Staff of the Month 🍎🌟

She is excited to be entering her four years at WSST. Before arriving at Western, she served as the Operation Coordinator at Pioneer Preparatory School for thirteen years. In addition to her front office experience, she also worked at Riverside Elementary School in the Special Education department as a teacher assistant.

Amparo truly enjoys working with youth and seeing the students thrive. Some of her hobbies include hiking, organizing her home, spending time with her son & sisters, cooking, traveling, and watching her favorite show Golden Girls.

Kate Manning is a middle school math and computer science instructor. Hailing from Pensacola, Florida, she received her Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology from Florida State University. She is currently working on earning her M.Ed from Arizona State University. Kate loves providing meaningful learning experiences for her students. In her free time you can find her reading, running, hiking, listening to music or podcasts about music history, or volunteering at the MIM.

Having excelled in track and field for over 14 years, he has a deep understanding of athletic training and performance.
As a Physical Education Teacher, Kejavon is committed to instilling a love for physical fitness and promoting a healthy lifestyle among his students. He designs engaging and dynamic lesson plans that combine sports, exercise, and teamwork to create an inclusive and enjoyable learning environment. Kejavon’s passion for track and field allows him to inspire and motivate his students to reach their full potential.

🌟🍎Throw back to August when Argenis Salazar won Staff of the Month!!🍎🌟

Argenis Salazar Sanchez is the Hallway Monitor at Western School of Science and Technology. On any given day, you can find Argenis walking around the hallways on campus making sure students are where they are suppose to be and providing extra support for the discipline team.

This year would be his second year working for Western, not only as the hallway monitor but as the E-Sports head coach and potentially assistant coed soccer coach. Argenis is also an alumni, graduating in 2018 from Western and now is currently enrolled at Phoenix College where he studies Psychology.

In his free time, Argenis likes to play soccer as well as video games with friends. He also loves to watch sports such as football, baseball, basketball and soccer.
