There are 75,000 children the Maryvale community in west Phoenix. Of those children, 78% are Hispanic/Latino and approximately 90% qualify for free or reduced lunch – an indicator of poverty. There are
zero high schools with an “A” rating from the Arizona Department of Education in Maryvale. Each year in the United States, there is demand for 140,000 computer science and engineering jobs, but our schools are graduating only 40,000 – a discrepancy of 100,000 skilled graduates. Vision
Western School: CFA proposes to sustainably address the educational and economic needs of Arizona’s Latino youth. When the school is successful, it will provide a proof point in the Maryvale neighborhood that low-income underserved youth can access the educational skills necessary to be successful in the new economy, be prepared for college persistence and graduation, and become integral parts of Arizona’s new global economy. Western School: CFA aims to be the first “A” rated high school in the Maryvale neighborhood. Hybrid (or Blended) Learning – a combination of in-class and online learning – to provide an individualized learning path for all students
2. A focus on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) throughout all grade levels to connect with the needs of the global technological economy
3. Core Knowledge in grades 7 and 8 to provide necessary background knowledge to support student learning
4. Advanced Placement (AP) college-aligned courses in grades 9 through 12 to provide a rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum
