Student Spotlight: Meet cellist, Tim C!

Q: What is your favorite part of taking music lessons at Music Makers?
A: The staff, and particularly my teacher Miss Andrea. She is a kind, patient and very knowledgeable teacher who consistently challenges me to be better.

Q: What is your favorite song to play and why?
A: Currently my favorite piece is Hayden's Surprise Symphony. It requires a lot of different dynamics which I've always found challenging to incorporate into my playing. Hayden has opened that door for me. As a result I really enjoy playing that piece.

Q: What inspired you to take music lessons?
A: I've always thought the cello is a beautiful instrument, and I wanted to see if I can make it sound beautiful. Additionally, I believe the difficulty I experience in learning to play it is challenging my brain in terrific ways, which I feel is very important in the fight against cognitive decline.

Q: Most memorable musical moment?
A: There have been so many memorable moments!! Certainly, one of the top ones has to be the first time I played through the prelude of Bach's cello suite No.1 in its entirety. Have I finished with it? Not even close, there's still so much to improve upon and learn about it!

Q: What are your future musical goals?
A: I simply want to continue to improve as I have over these first 10 years. One day at a time, one skill at a time.

Q: Which famous musician would you choose to meet?
A: Well, it would have to be Yo Yo Ma. I have a friend who met him. He played in a concert with him, and he talked about what a kind and generous person he was.

Q: What are three fun facts about yourself?
A: I spent two summers working as a photographer on an archeological dig in Cyprus in the late eighties, I built an electric car in 2009, I am pretty good at baking many types of bread.

Last month marked Tim's 10th musicversarry at Music Makers! His dedication to music and lifelong learning are admirable, we're so glad he is a part of our community!

Our Story

Music Maker Workshops is a family owned and operated studio started by Mrs. Bev Bigam in 1997. Her musical journey started as a young girl in McBride B.C. where she took lessons from a talented and enthusiastic teacher all throughout school. This teacher instilled a love of music and soon Bev was considered to be a gifted pianist. Throughout her life, she shared her gift as pianist, and organist for the church. She also shared her music in schools as a guest pianist and directed many choirs. She invested in her own children’s music education and enrolled them in lessons, community bands and orchestras. An interesting fact: she worked at the Red Deer funeral home for many years providing the music for many services. When she moved to the US from Canada in the 90’s she knew she wanted to pursue her passion and open her own music studio. Initially, she focused on providing lessons for seniors. However, it wasn’t long before she realized it was the children that were eager to have the lessons. Changing her vision to focus on lessons for all ages she asked her daughters to join the team. In 2000 Shelley Yakubow had just finished up her Elementary Ed Degree and alongsider her Mother began teaching group piano classes for elementary aged children. In 2002 Kim Steedman left her nursing career to start teaching Kindermusik classes. They found they absolutely loved working together and couldn’t imagine doing anything else but working at the studio. Throughout the years have adapted, changed, and grown a beautiful place for students to learn with an amazing team of talented teachers.

It’s of highest priority to nurture a positive environment to inspire musical development in our students. Our faculty is highly qualified with college training or professional performance experience. We offer piano, guitar, bass, voice, violin, viola, cello, saxophone, clarinet, flute, and drum lessons. We have a variety of programming including Rock Band, Jazz Ensembles, String Ensembles, Drum Corps, and Kindermusik.

Now Mrs. B has retired from the day-to-day running of the studio but still occasionally comes in to teach a couple of lessons on Monday mornings. Shelley & Kim co-direct the studio and enjoy the responsibility of continuing the legacy of positive music-making in-which a sweet, humble teacher gifted their Mother many years ago.
