Still looking for a school this year?

Desert Garden Montessori's MYHS is the only school in Arizona offering the International Baccalaureate programme in a Montessori setting — an IB middle school and Montessori high school on one campus in Phoenix, with class sizes small enough that every student is known by name.

What that looks like day to day: uninterrupted work periods instead of bells, IB assessment criteria and the MYP Personal Project, mixed-age classrooms, and guides who've been here long enough to help support your child every step of the way.

Our doors are always open. Schedule a tour to start the application process and see whether we're a great fit for each other. Link in bio.

This month a few of our primary students showed us how a birthday works in a Montessori classroom.

It's called the Walk Around the Sun. A candle goes in the center of the circle to stand in for the sun, and the birthday child holds a globe and walks a full lap around it for every year they've been alive. One lap, one year.

The reason we do it this way is that a birthday is one of the first abstract ideas a young child runs into. "You're turning five" doesn't mean much when you're four. However, walking the earth around the sun five times, holding it in your hands, is something a child can feel. That's most of Montessori in one image: take the big idea and make it something the body can understand first.

If you're a Montessori family, you may have watched your child do this. If you're not, it costs a candle and a globe, and it works just as well at a kitchen table. Save it for the next birthday in your house!

Sometimes, the most important lessons aren't found in a classroom.

They're found in shared experiences, new friendships, moments of challenge, and the simple joy of being together.

Our MYHS beginning-of-the-year campout is a chance to step outside the everyday, build community, and start the year with excitement for all that's ahead.

This is where the year begins. We can't wait to share what these incredible students accomplish over the new 2026-2027 school year!

30 YEARS. 30 STORIES. THE HEARTS OF DGM. 🤍

Some people become part of a place. Others become part of its story.

Ms. Jorgeanne has been part of the DGM story from the very beginning. She spent 13 years growing alongside our community, left to explore and grow in new ways, and eventually found her way back to us.

That’s what makes this village so special. The teachers who stay, the teachers who return, the families who grow with us, and the relationships that become something much bigger than a school. They become family.

Ms. Jorgeanne is home to DGM, just as DGM is home to her. And her story is one of so many that remind us that the heart of this community has always been its people.

This is the village. This is the heart of DGM.

Curious if Montessori is right for your family? We’d love to welcome you in. Come take a tour, meet our community, and experience what makes DGM so special.

30 Years, 30 Stories: The Beginning of DGM [Pt. 2]

Our founder had her master's in counseling and a clear path ahead of her. She chose a different one.

Ms. Shetal didn't start Desert Garden Montessori because it was the safe choice. She started it on faith, without knowing where it would lead. Just a belief that children deserved a place that trusted them, and the conviction that if that place didn't exist yet, she would build it herself.

She couldn't have known then what that leap would become. That one room in her home would grow into a school. That families would find their way here year after year and place their own faith and trust in what she started. That thirty years later, there would be teachers, staff, and parents all pouring into the same thing she believed in from the beginning.

Because that's what happens here: we believe in your children. We care for them with our whole hearts. They are our future, and we don't take that lightly.

Part three is coming next, and it's the last chapter of Ms. Shetal's story from the very beginning until the next story unfolds.

Over 100 years ago, Maria Montessori set out to build a space where children could grow with confidence, independence, and curiosity.

We celebrated her birthday this past week, and our favorite part was watching the children build timelines of her life and accomplishments. They traced her journey, and we got to reflect on how her philosophy still shapes everything we do at Desert Garden Montessori.

There's a lot coming this month, starting with our DREAM event on October 17. Stay tuned for all the stories we share as we celebrate THIRTY years of DGM.

We're officially less than two months away from our annual Dream event, and this year is a special one. We're celebrating thirty years of Desert Garden Montessori.

This year's theme is Miracles, because the Dream lives through the everyday ones. A child reading their first word. A parent finding their people. A community that keeps showing up, year after year.

Dream is our annual fundraiser, an evening where we gather, celebrate, and raise money for the children at the heart of everything we do. Let's keep paving the way for the miracles still to come.

Join us October 17.

Happy birthday, Maria Montessori!

Born in 1870, she became one of Italy's first female doctors before she ever set foot in a classroom. When she did, she noticed something most people missed: given real materials and the freedom to choose, children focus, repeat, and learn on their own.

That idea built a school in Rome, then thousands around the world.

It built ours, too.

Everything you see at DGM, from the child-sized pitchers to the quiet concentration in the room, traces back to her.

Over 100 years of her philosophy and now thirty years in for Desert Garden Montessori, we're still following the child. Thank you, Maria!

30 Years, 30 Stories: Ms. Kinnari

Twenty-three years. That's how long Ms. Kinnari has been caring for the youngest members of our DGM family in the infant classroom.

When it comes to infants, she knows her stuff. She picks up on their cues, brings holistic practices that fit right in with Montessori, and is the person everyone in the room looks to. She has that calm, warm presence you feel the second you walk in.

We're so grateful to have her. And our babies are, too.
