Whether it happens in an IEP meeting or in a “casual conversation” in the hallway… predetermining a student’s SPED outcome is not okay!

You can’t decide ahead of time that a student “needs” a certain placement, will qualify for special education, or won’t qualify before the appropriate process has taken place.

We need to look at the WHOLE child, the data, the interventions and supports that have been provided, the student’s response to those supports, and all of the other relevant information before making those decisions.

And no… saying “we already know where this is going”doesn’t make it okay. 👀

IEP decisions should be data informed not predetermined.

Every student deserves a team that is willing to look at the evidence before deciding what they need. 💕

A behavior plan is not a recommendation. It’s not a list of suggestions that staff can pick and choose depending on the day.

If a student has a behavior plan, the plan should be followed ✨consistently✨ and with fidelity. That consistency matters because the plan is based on the student’s individual needs, data, and the strategies determined to best support them.

When we don’t follow the plan, we aren’t giving the student a fair opportunity to be successful and we’re also making it much harder to know whether the strategies are actually working.

If something in the plan isn’t working, that’s a conversation for the team and a reason to review the plan… not a reason to stop following it.

Consistency matters. Fidelity matters. And most importantly, the student deserves for us to follow it and truly support them.
