Nearly 50 years ago, Mesa Public Schools junior high teacher Jim Palmer had a vision: some of the greatest lessons happen beyond the classroom.

In 1977, Jim took a leap of faith and turned that vision into Project Exploration. Since then, his passion for hands-on learning has helped tens of thousands of students explore the Grand Canyon, Southern Arizona, California, and destinations far beyond.

What started with one teacher and one idea has grown into 50 years of adventure, education, exploration, and unforgettable memories for generations of students.

As we approach our 50th anniversary in 2027, we celebrate Jim Palmer—the teacher who started it all and created a legacy that continues today:
