We just can’t get enough of seeing our older buddies learning alongside our younger buddies! 💙📚

Our students are working toward fluency goals while building the skills to become confident, independent readers, thinkers, and writers.

A huge thank you to our teachers for creating these meaningful opportunities for students to learn, read, and grow together! 📖✨

Mr. Atencio’s 4th Grade students were fully engaged as they explored the five senses through our district-adopted HMH curriculum!

Students organized their thinking with a graphic organizer, collaborated with their teams using a consensus map, and participated in meaningful team discussions to share their learning and build on one another’s ideas.

We love seeing our Jaguars learning, collaborating, and making their thinking visible! 🐆💙

💛 A huge thank you to Mrs. Santamaria for giving our staff lounge some extra love! 💛

Mrs. Santamaria originally transformed this space a few years ago, and she recently came back to spruce it up, clean it up, and fill in the blanks to make it feel warm, welcoming, and relaxing for our staff.

We are so grateful for her generosity, her time, and the care she put into every detail.

Thank you, Mrs. Santamaria, for continuing to share your talents with us.

🌟 Ms. Martinez’s class is starting strong! 🌟

Students are building their communication skills, growing as leaders, and having a great time getting to know their buddies from an older grade level!

It’s wonderful to see students practicing their Leader in Me skills, making connections, and building a strong classroom community from the very beginning of the year!

We are proud to share that the JWR Café received an “A” for Food Safety!

Our incredible cafeteria team was joined in celebrating this achievement by Superintendent Dr. Cecilia Maes, Governing Board President Mat Nevarez, and incoming Governing Board Member Wilmarie Maldonado Castro, who will begin her term in January 2027!

A huge congratulations and THANK YOU to our amazing JWR Café team for their hard work and dedication to keeping our kitchen clean, safe, and ready to serve our students every day!

🎶 Our Jaguar Band Continues to Grow! 🎶

We are excited to see more students taking an interest in joining our band program under the direction of Ms. DeAna Torres!

Being involved in band helps students build confidence, focus, teamwork, responsibility, and a lifelong love of music!

Would you like to support our growing band? Tax credit donations can help us purchase more instruments so that every student who wants to join can participate without having to provide their own instrument. Simply indicate that your donation is for the JWR Band!

From partnering with younger students during reading, to leading student expectation assemblies, launching our school spirit T-shirts, serving as student teacher assistants, and helping younger students set up their student portfolios—our Jaguars are showing us what leadership looks like in action.

They aren’t just learning about leadership… they are living it.

Student leadership shapes our school. It builds confidence, strengthens relationships, creates ownership, and reminds us that every student has something important to contribute.

It’s been another great week at James W. Rice, and we are so proud of our Jaguars! 💙

One of the highlights of the week was establishing our Buddy Groups for the year! Every Wednesday, students from each grade level will have the opportunity to support and learn from students in another grade level while putting their Leader in Me skills into action.

We are focusing on 16 competencies that will help our students develop the skills they need for their future—and our Jaguars have already risen to the challenge! What started as a classroom lesson quickly turned into students looking for ways to support their younger buddies on the playground and even asking to have lunch together. 🥰

This partnership will continue throughout the entire school year, giving our students countless opportunities to lead, connect, encourage, and learn from one another.

We can’t wait to see where this Jaguar leadership takes us!

Be Safe. Be Respectful. Be Responsible.

Be a Leader.

We loved seeing all of our Jaguars back on campus and ready to jump right into learning! 📚✨ Our students quickly settled into academics, but they were especially delighted to be back together—socializing, reconnecting, and learning alongside their friends.

Student leadership was evident from day one as we picked right back up where we left off last May. It was wonderful to see our Jaguars demonstrating the expectations, taking responsibility, and showing what it means to be a leader in our school community.

And our newest Jaguars? Our kindergarteners were READY! 💛 Many of them already knew what it means to be a Jaguar because they visited JWR and made buddies with our students last year through our Preschool Project. They came in confident, excited, and ready to learn!

The first week is in the books, and we couldn't be more excited about what this year has in store. It's going to be a GREAT year to be a Jaguar! 🐆💙
