In library classes, students are learning about bears! Why? It's Fat Bear Week!

Some of the largest brown bears on Earth make their home at Brooks River in Katmai National Park, Alaska. Brown bears get fat to survive. Fat Bear Week started in 2014 and is an annual tournament celebrating how successful the bears were in preparing for winter hibernation. This tournament is a great way to raise awareness of brown bears and highlight National Parks.

K-2 students will read non-fiction facts on PebbleGo and listen to fiction stories about bears. We will compare the differences and learn how to draw a fat bear. Grades 3-5 learned how to access Google Classroom, accept an invite from a teacher, and to complete an assignment. They also had a chance to use the explore.org website. They were disappointed that many live streams are blocked at school, but found all kinds of great information on the FAQ site and loved seeing past Fat Bear winners. Next week, grades 3-5 will do their own research on bears, complete with illustrations.
