PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. - Phillipsburg is remembering a beloved teacher who, decades ago, launched the town's kindergarten program. Mrs. Joyce Sickels taught for 34 and a half years, though students say

Sickels was a longtime kindergarten teacher at Freeman Elementary School. She taught for more than 34 years, retiring in 1978.

Joyce Sickels was surrounded by friends, family and some local leaders who helped her ring in the milestone with a proclamation.

New life after sitting empty for 1 year... Phillipsburg town employees moving to Freeman Elementary. Everything except for the police department will move to Freeman Elementary School for three years.

Town officials are working on a solution for a mold problem plaguing the municipal building.

Memories of Freeman School
As Freeman School is coming to a close, former teachers and students shared their memories.
Lori B. -“We had no backpacks. We carried our books. There were no folders.”
Linda Snyder’s first class of sixth graders had 31 children! “We had one hour and 15 minutes for lunch. Students walked home for lunch. Most kids came back early to play kickball.”
Mr. Lance, a former student loved playing kickball at recess. He also enjoyed washing the blackboards with sponges and water.
Mary Ann Makovsky let her students clap erasers after school. “The white dust would fly everywhere!”
Miss Beck remembered the Track and Field Races held at Phillipsburg High School. To practice, the students ran, jumped and threw in the alley. They ran around the block in front of the school. Freeman competed against Barber, Andover and Green Street Schools. “Freeman was the best because we practiced the hardest.”
Mrs.Beck summed it up the best: “Freeman is more like a family than a school.”
Freeman School will always be remembered as a family to the teachers, students and staff of many generations as it comes to a close.
