PCOM honors and celebrates Juneteenth—the day marking the end of slavery in the United States. It was on June 19, 1865, that Union soldiers, led by General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the American Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were now free–more than two years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation that freed slaves.
Regular college operations will be closed on Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth.

Did you know the United States Army was founded in Philadelphia in 1775? 🇺🇸
Clinical Associate Professor Robert Bassett, DO ‘06, FAAEM, FACEP, FACMT, shares his experience in military medicine as part of PCOM's partnership with 52 Weeks of Firsts during America’s 250th anniversary—highlighting the impact of caring for those who serve and the meaning it brings to his work.
“I originally thought I’d leave the Army after my scholarship commitment. More than 20 years later, I’m still serving because of the camaraderie, shared purpose, and privilege of caring for people willing to put their lives on the line for our country. Honestly, I probably get more out of it than I give.”
Through organizations like PCOM’s Student Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (SAMOPS), students carry that legacy forward preparing to serve both their patients and their country.
