Black women in the U.S. face higher rates of pregnancy-related complications and death. In 2024, Black women had a maternal mortality rate of 44.8 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared with 17.9 deaths per 100,000 for women overall. Every person who gives birth deserves to feel safe, heard, and supported throughout their pregnancy, before and after giving birth.

This September we began another season of Talleres Familiares (Family Workshops), an intergenerational monthly workshop series for Spanish speaking families in South Philly. This is our 4th (!!) year of this iteration of Talleres and many of the participants have been with us from the very start!

During our session, one parent shared that, prior to Talleres Familiares, whenever her children would come into the bathroom while she was menstruating and ask her about it, she would say that she had drunk a lot of hibiscus tea. But, ever since she started attending these workshops, she realized that she is doing a disservice to her children by not using the opportunity to educate them. Now, she talks more openly about puberty and periods and is working to normalize the fact that all bodies are changing and growing at their own pace.

We are so excited to be co-creating this very special program alongside participants!

Hi, I'm a new intern at YES!, and I'm excited to join this team this semester and help the community understand themselves. There's nothing like saying YES! to yourself. I'm a 2nd year public health student and I have high interest in mental health. Health is Wealth!

[id: A vibrant scrapbook-style “Meet Our Intern” graphic introduces Miracle Zaza, a young Black woman and intern at YES! (Your Empowered S*xuality). Miracle is pictured smiling in a large portrait on the left. She has deep brown skin, dark brown eyes, and shoulder-length brown hair styled in a smooth, layered bob with side-swept bangs. She is wearing a gray off-the-shoulder top, small earrings, and a necklace. The graphic uses bright pink, purple, yellow, black, and cream torn-paper textures with hand-drawn hearts, stars, arrows, and doodles. A childhood photo of Miracle appears near the center in a tilted Polaroid-style frame, showing her as a young Black girl wearing a light pink outfit with small colorful clips in her hair. Text introduces Miracle as a La Salle University student majoring in Public Health with a Communications minor and living in Philadelphia, PA. She describes herself as Liberian, a people person, and someone who loves film, good food, meaningful conversations, and trying new experiences. She is passionate about community, health equity, storytelling, and making an impact through creative work. The graphic also shares her excitement about interning with YES! and supporting its mission of inclusive, intersectional, and consent-based sexuality education.]

HAPPY NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY!

We're sending love to the LGBTQIA+ community, whether you're out, keeping things private, still figuring it out, or anywhere in between. No matter where you are in your journey, you deserve a place in the community and to be loved and respected.

Coming out can be joyful, complicated, and even scary. Remember, there is no "right" way to be yourself, and you deserve to come out when it feels right to you. You're constantly growing and learning more about yourself, and that's okay!

We taught boundaries to the 4th-8th graders at Vare-Washington!

Jamie shared some highlights from one of the 4th grade classes:

"Students responded yes/no/sometimes to different boundary questions, including whether they like hugs from teachers. I reminded them that teachers might have boundaries about hugs too! Their teacher said, 'Yes, when I say to get off of me, I really mean that!' We talked about how important it is to listen to and respect when someone sets a boundary like that.

Students shared how it can be hard to say no to hugs from family because 'we're all family!' and they're expected to be open to anything family wants to do. We discussed how we're allowed to have boundaries with family and deserve to have them respected!"

We'll be back in soon to talk about supportive relationships.

Slide 2 - A photo of Lili, a facilitator, wearing a light blue YES! shirt. She is standing in front of a projector that says "Boundaries." Slide 3 - A photo with a purple border. There are six note cards with handwriting. Handwriting says, from left to right, top to bottom: Something that I liked from today is that the opening activity was a activity that required participation and movement, and it wasn't just a person talking the whole time; Something I liked was how during the game you asked us why we chose what we chose, with a drawing of a bird; No question but I liked the game; I like the game; I liked how you let us move around, with "No," "Sotimes," and "Yes" in boxes; I liked the game we played today.]

Last week, we tabled at the Women Against Abuse iPledge Event and were able to give people access to resources. We took a pledge to take action against abus!ve relationships and advocate for those whose voices have been silenced.

Thank you to Women Against Abuse for bringing the community together to speak out against domestic violence and provide critical resources to everyone!

Hi everyone! My name is Keisha, and I’m excited to be interning with YES! I’m a fourth-year student majoring in Public Health, with a particular interest in Black maternal health and exploring the many different areas of public health. I’m looking forward to gaining more knowledge and experience surrounding seggsuality and seggsual health while also contributing to the work being done through the program. Outside of school, I enjoy reading and doing art in my free time. I’m looking forward to learning throughout this experience!
