FIFA World Cup 2026 starts soon, and what a great opportunity it is for learning and sharing in so many possible ways!🙂

I grew up in Cairo, Egypt 🇪🇬with a strong soccer culture all around, I have vivid memories of my first in 1998 as a child, even though Egypt never made it back to the World Cup stage until 2016, our people cheered for many teams and followed games closely.
From Brazil, to Spain, and Argentina, to any Arab or African teams who made it, we always cheered hard and connected with players ⛹️‍♂️🥅

My brother and sister and I always got jerseys, and maybe a replica of the official for our neighborhood soccer games ⚽

It's 2026, and for the first time I'll be not only living in the host country but in one of the host cities: Philadelphia! My home for more than 10 years. 🇺🇸🌎

There will be events, festivals, conversations, and so much more to share and explore!

What is Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha is a Muslim holiday about sacrifice, commemorating Abraham’s devotion to Allah. When translated from Arabic to English, the holiday’s name is the “Feast (or Festival) of Sacrifice.”

What is the story behind Eid al-Adha?

Abraham had a dream that Allah asked him to sacrifice his son Ishmael. As Abraham prepared to give up his son, Allah stopped him and gave him a ram to sacrifice instead. This was a test to determine Abraham’s willingness and loyalty to Allah.

How is Eid al-Adha celebrated?

Every year, Muslims start the Eid al-Adha festivities by saying extra prayers. These are Eid prayers. Many people congregate in mosques and wear their finest clothes.

There is a “Qurban,” which is a ritual sacrifice. Animals such as goats, sheep, cows, or camels are sacrificed to symbolize Abraham’s willingness to offer up his son for Allah.

People divide the meat into three portions. A third is given to those in need or poor, one to friends and neighbors, and the remaining third is cooked and eaten by the family.

Charity is another part of Eid al-Adha. Along with giving meat to those less fortunate, many Muslims donate money to charities that provide meat for people who need it. This ensures everyone can celebrate the festival and that no one goes hungry.
