SKMC believes that a diverse and inclusive environment is necessary for optimal medical education and patient care. SKMC recognizes that we are at the center of a widely diverse city and ever-diversifying nation where disparities can lead to disproportionately poor health outcomes. As such, we are committed to producing a diverse pool of physicians to better address health disparities, improve com
munity health, and lead efforts to eliminate health inequalities. We value diversity across all lines – including race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation. Moreover, we are committed to providing equal educational and employment opportunities for all persons, without regard to race, color, national and ethnic origin, religion, sexual orientation, age, handicap, or veteran status. SKMC students are vital to all diversity and inclusion initiatives. They participate in local and national organizations that promote diversity and support groups that are underrepresented in medicine. Students collaborate with and assist the office with the implementation of educational programs promoting diversity and inclusion. SKMC students also participate in the medical college’s pipeline programs, designed to increase diversity in the healthcare workforce by exposing youth from underprivileged and historically underserved backgrounds to various healthcare professions. Our pipeline programs also provide education and mentorship opportunities. In doing so, we strive to increase the number of qualified applicants to the medical profession while strengthening and investing in our community. Students also actively participate in the SKMC Council on Diversity and Inclusion.
