La Salle grad and former Roman Catholic High School teacher and coach Patrick Shanahan, ‘84, has been cleaning up Philadelphia for years.

Since retiring in 2020, Patrick spends two or three days a week in Philly’s FDR park picking up trash, connecting with the community, and making our city greener for everyone. He takes cardboard and paper to Newman & Company in Wissinoming, to be turned into recycled paperboard while glass bottles get dropped off at Bottle Underground, where the nonprofit upcycles them to be used by artists.

As featured in The Philadelphia Inquirer, La Salle University Math and Computer Science Department Chair and Associate Professor Timothy Highley, Jr., Ph.D., and computer science majors Tannah Duncan, ‘27, and Ilia Volkov, ‘27, made national and local headlines for their innovative approach to one of the NBA’s toughest challenges: how to discourage tanking while still supporting competitive balance.

The team developed a mathematical model called “Carry-Over Lottery Allocation (COLA)” which offers a fresh take on how the NBA Draft Lottery could reward sustained competitiveness rather than single-season losses.

Their work brings La Salle research into the national sports conversation at a moment when the league was actively rethinking its own system. At La Salle, big ideas don’t just stay in theory — they enter the game. 💡🔢

La Salle grad and Social Work Assistant Professor Brendan Young, ‘12, made service a cornerstone of his time on campus as an undergraduate student, and has carried that commitment well beyond those years, proving that service doesn’t stop at 20th and Olney. Brendan has served at Crossroads Hospice of Philadelphia as well as in Health Partners Plans at Jefferson.

💬 “Both inside and outside the classroom, La Salle instilled in me the importance of service. It is at La Salle that I learned about the importance of human relationships, meeting people where they are, and the need for community in promoting the common good. Faculty taught me skills that were essential to utilize in my professional practice as a social worker. Meanwhile, my involvement in campus service activities ensured that these values were integral in developing my own personal value system.” 💬

La Salle University’s accreditation was reaffirmed this week by The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).

This action acknowledged that the University is now in compliance with all standards of accreditation.

Through a generous $1 million gift from an anonymous donor, La Salle University School of Business students can receive support as they pursue their degrees.

Explorers Sydney Reed, ‘27, and Rose Schankweiler, ‘27, have both always dreamed of studying abroad. La Salle University helped them achieve just that.

Between them, Sydney and Rose have collected new passport stamps from England, the Czech Republic, Poland, Italy, Denmark, Morocco, and other nearby countries.

Ever wondered what it’s like to step inside a real courtroom? ⚖️

Explorers in CRJ 325, Criminal Courts, led by Professor Patrick Dohony, got a firsthand look at the justice system in action during a visit to the Philadelphia Criminal Justice Center. From observing bail decisions to sitting in on portions of homicide trials, this experience brought their coursework to life in a powerful way.

At La Salle University, learning goes beyond the classroom

La Salle grad Nhi Nguyen, ‘22, dedicated her time at La Salle to service through the Community Service Scholars program, Neighbor to Neighbor, Neighborhood Tutoring, and the Special Olympics.

Now she incorporates service into her work as a community-based occupational therapist. 💬 As an OTP, incorporating advocacy for our clients and all stakeholders at any level of society is a daily and vital practice. This frame of thinking stems back to my Lasallian service.” 💬
