Temple Music Prep Temple Music Prep offers music classes for all ages and all skill levels (infants to adult)

Temple Music Prep enjoys a reputation nationwide for program innovation and teaching excellence. As a division of Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance, it is uniquely able to combine university expertise with Philadelphia’s outstanding cultural assets, assuring excellence in experience and results. Temple Music Prep's Center for Lifelong Learning offers a wide spectrum of individual lessons and group enrichment opportunities for children and adults alike. Its Center for Gifted Young Musicians is designed specifically for the training of young instrumentalists (strings and harp) who demonstrate great potential for musical achievement. The Community Music Scholars Program which includes the Philadelphia String Project at Temple University provides opportunities for school-aged Philadelphia children. Temple Music Prep provides lifelong, non-credit learning opportunities in music and dance to the Greater Philadelphia community. Temple Music Prep is a member of The National Guild of Community Arts Education, the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, and the National String Project Consortium. In addition, it is a founding school candidate of the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program.

Get to know the artist behind SCENES before Wednesday's performance. 🎶

In a recent interview, Temple Music Prep instructor Jay Epstein shares how SCENES grew from a multi-year composition project exploring personal growth, change, and self-discovery through recurring musical themes.

Join us at Beyond the Notes: A Jazz Suite as Jay and his quartet bring the complete work to life, pausing throughout the performance to discuss the inspirations, compositional process, and improvisational elements behind the music.

🎺 The Brass & Wind Project at Temple University (BWP) serves students (3rd- 6th grades) interested in learning the musical skills essential to playing a band instrument. In weekly large and small group classes, fundamental skills will be taught, allowing the student to thrive in a low-pressure and supportive environment. Beginner instruments provided, preparing for studies in flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and MORE!

🎻 The Philadelphia String Project at Temple University (PSP) serves beginning young string (violin, viola, cello, double bass) players (2nd-7th grades) from the Philadelphia area in this weekly 3-year program incorporating group lessons and string ensembles. Students are taught by a Master Teacher and supported by Temple University undergraduate music education and performance string interns. No audition or previous musical experience required. Student must provide their own instrument. Visit the course listing for additional information on purchasing an instrument.

It's not too late to join- the CMSP Upper Division is still accepting new students! Submit your virtual audition today to apply for the Community Music Scholars Program’s (CMSP) Upper Division! 📝 There is no fee to audition, registration is required.

The Community Music Scholars Program meets on Saturday mornings, September through May at Presser Hall at Temple University Main Campus. The CMSP Upper Division provides students with weekly individual lessons and music theory classes, in addition to large performing ensemble experiences in strings 🎻, winds 📯, and jazz 🎺.🎶✨

🎶 Live jazz and engaging conversations come together at Beyond the Notes: A Jazz Suite, featuring Temple Music Prep instructor, Jay Epstein and his quartet!

Join Jay Epstein and his quartet as they perform live and discuss his new original work, SCENES, a jazz suite. This event features some of the most creative and talented jazz musicians in the city today as we bring to life the flowing themes of the suite combined with improvised ideas that tie everything together. In this intimate setting, you'll get the chance to connect with the full musical experience and learn about how jazz and improvised music can be orchestrated and arranged into this format.

SCENES is a new jazz suite stemming from a multi-year composition project which follows a recurring theme that shows up in different ways throughout the work. It represents how we progress through life, discover ourselves, and go through change. In this event, we will perform the entire suite, pausing to talk about inspiration, recurring themes, compositional techniques, and more. The suite consists of 3-sections across 10 scenes. Each with its own unique character but equally connected to what comes before and after.
