Happy Birthday
Obvious soundtrack today from my collection. To honor what would have been Mr. Baldwin’s 100th birthday today (2024).
“Black Man in America” recorded at WFMT Studio
Interviewed by Studs Terkel
Released on Credo in 1962
James Arthur Baldwin (August 2, 1924 – December 1, 1987) was an American , , , , and . His 1953 novel Go Tell It on the Mountain has been ranked by TIME magazine as one of the top 100 English-language novels. His 1955 essay collection Notes of a Native Son helped establish his reputation as a voice for human equality. Baldwin was an influential public figure and orator, especially during the civil rights movement in the United States.
Baldwin’s fiction posed fundamental personal questions and dilemmas amid complex social and psychological pressures. Themes of masculinity, sexuality, race, and class intertwine to create intricate narratives that influenced both the civil rights movement and the gay liberation movement in mid-twentieth century America. Baldwin’s protagonists are often, but not exclusively African American; gay and bisexual men feature prominently in his work (as in his 1956 novel Giovanni’s Room). His characters typically face internal and external obstacles in their search for self- and social acceptance.
Baldwin’s work continues to influence artists and writers. His unfinished manuscript Remember This House was expanded and adapted as the 2016 documentary film I Am Not Your Negro, winning the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary. His 1974 novel If Beale Street Could Talk was adapted into a 2018 film of the same name, which earned widespread praise.

We are delighted to share that Dr. Campbell has been awarded another fellowship for the 2023-2024 Center for Antiracist Scholarship, Advocacy, and Action Scholar-Advocates Program at Arcadia University . Dr. Campbell’s project is tentatively titled, Dust + Dignity Podcast Special Series: Champions of the Culture: Modern Advocates Preserving Black Music.
“The CASAA Scholar-Advocates Program—aligned with the University’s ongoing efforts to combat anti-Black racism and to promote justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion—was developed with recognition that access to dedicated research time, enhanced financial/academic resources, and engagement with a network of scholars in and outside of one’s field can accelerate the kinds of antiracist scholarship, advocacy, and action that CASAA was intended to facilitate.”

Kicking off season 3 of the Dust + Dignity Podcast we thought we would do something a little different and focus on a single album. “We Shall Overcome: Songs of the Freedom Riders and the Sit-Ins” on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings.
This 1961 recording of spirituals, gospel and new music to "express the spirit of freedom" was the result of an effort by producer and performer Guy Carawan to bring together singers representative of hundreds of thousands African American students from the south participating in sit-ins, stand-ins and freedom rides for "first class citizenship" during the civil rights movement. The songs are performed by The Montgomery Gospel Trio, comprised of three high school girls from Alabama, as well as four seminary students who call themselves "The Nashville Quartet" in an impromptu session as recorded by Moses Asch.
The Dust + Dignity Podcast is hosted by Dr. Bruce Campbell Jr. He explores the connections between social justice, leadership and music that unsung heroes demonstrate within the work they do every day.
