In 1949, Penn's College for Women funded a position in the University Placement Service office to work just with female students on the job hunt. By 1951, we were hosting the first ever career fair just for women, co-sponsored by Gimbel's, an important Philadelphia-based department store. Today, retail sales positions may not seem like high profile work, but these jobs paved the way for future generations of working women.

Long before online portals, we had a hotline to the credentials office where students could check on the status of their letters of recommendation and references, a practice that remained in place until the mid-2000s. Today, this all done digitally, though we have retained decades' worth paper files in university archives so that alumni can still access their letters if needed.

University Secretary, Dr. Edward Mumford said students could easily do both through "careful budgeting of one's time"...nearly a century later, Penn's advice is basically the same!
