If you are fans of The Pitt (like the person writing this post right now š) you might be very happy to learn that the Medical College of Pennsylvania (MCP) played a large role in the emergence of specialized Emergency Medicine residencies and training. Fictional residents like Dr. Trinity Santos and Dr. Mel King would have followed in the footsteps of MCPās own Dr. Pamela Bensen. For this weekās highlight for Women In Medicine, we bring you Dr. Bensenās story.
Pam Bensen, MCP ā71, was instrumental in the creation of MCPās emergency residency program. She was a self-proclaimed "adrenaline junkie,ā at the time that Dr. David Wagner and Dr. Ethel Weinberg had been working on the creation of an emergency medicine residency to help meet the hospital demand for trained emergency physicians. With their assistance, Bensen, a senior medical student at the time, met with a committee from the AMA to advocate for the accreditation of an emergency medicine/acute care internship and residency program. Her efforts were successful, and Bensen would become one of the first acute care interns in the first program of its kind in the country. Bensen would later become the first woman to serve on the board of the American College of Emergency Medicine, helping to steer future students and residentsā education in emergency medicine.
As we continue our series for Women In Medicine Month, we recognize Dr. Bensenās dedication as one exemplary highlight of how women in medicine, whether as students or professionals, drive innovation within medicine itself and beyond.
