How do we define safety as it relates to our everyday lives, and what constitutes a threat? Physical threat is generally what comes to mind first, and it’s the main one we are taught is “valid”. But what else makes us unsafe? Put downs. Bullying. Uninvited touch. Coercion. Being left to do all the work. The list goes on and on. Safety is a practice. It’s creating and living within healthy interactions. This always, always begins with recognizing ourselves to be of value and worthy of protecting. The next step is to demonstrate that self-value by creating, expressing, and living boundaries. Not in anger. Not when something bad happens. We want to get ahead of things and express ourselves *before* things happen.
