The Black Cultural Center at the University of Pennsylvania

Makuu Black Cultural Center is a nexus of academic, professional, and personal growth for University of Pennsylvania students interested in Black culture and the African Diaspora. Through advising, leadership development, cultural and social programming we expand student access to the University's resources.

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the enslaved were finally free—a full two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is a celebration of that delayed but hard-won liberation. It’s a day to ground ourselves in the truth of our history, honor the ancestors who carried us through, and celebrate the culture and community that keep us moving forward.
