Today's BHM highlight is Daniel Hale Williams III, MD!
Williams was the first person to successfully perform an open heart surgery as well as an advocate for integration in the medical field. By opening Provident Hospital in Chicago, Williams established the first medical facility in the US to have an in*******al staff. He was also the first African American physician admitted to the American College of Surgeons.
His advocacy and work changed the worldwide medical landscape and his career is revered for blazing the trail for so many who came after him.

Happy Monday! Today's BHM spotlight is on James McCune Smith, MD!
Born into slavery, McCune Smith is well known for being a staunch abolitionist and dedicating his career to the care and well-being of African Americans in the US.
After getting his medical degree in Glasglow, Scotland, after being rejected from every American medical school, McCune Smith became the first African American to run a pharmacy in the nation! We recognize him today as a pioneer and trailblazer for black Americans in healthcare.
