Find your flow with Yuki Ishiguro on September 10!

πŸ—“οΈ Thursday, September 10, 7-8:30PM
πŸ“ & Space (1021 Hamilton Street #302)

πŸ“ Description: This class introduces contemporary dance techniques that Yuki Ishiguro developed through 15 years of professional experience as a dancer and choreographer in New York City. The class focuses on isolation, fluid transitions, weight shifts, and dynamic use of space. Drawing from his background in breakdance, Ishiguro also introduces his original floorwork method, which uses gravity, momentum, and the natural articulation of the joints to create fluid transitions from standing to the floor and back again.

Beyond developing physical technique, dancers will apply these ideas to contemporary movement phrases while exploring intention, breath, timing, and the direction of energy. Concepts drawn from Japanese movement philosophy and aestheticsβ€”including ma (space and time), in-yō (the interplay of opposing forces), ryΕ«dōbi (the beauty of fluid movement), and jo-ha-kyΕ« (gradual development, acceleration, and conclusion)β€”will be introduced as practical tools that can be understood through the body rather than as abstract theories.
This teaching method is based on Ishiguro’s academic research, which organizes contemporary dance through a framework of sixteen Japanese philosophical and aesthetic concepts. More info on our website!

↗️ LEVEL: Intermediate.

Starting in September with Meghan: Undoing Improvisation- Rigor as Applicable Tool!!

πŸ—“οΈ Saturday mornings, 11AM-12:30PM (in September, October, and November!)
πŸ“ & Space (1021 Hamilton St #302)

🟠 DESCRIPTION: Over the last 9 years, I have developed an improvisational method that has been particularly generative for me. It focuses on 'undoing' much of what I realized was my unconscious practice as a contemporary/post-modern/concert dance improvisor. I will share from that practice in the hopes it can be generative for participants as well- whether they are seasoned improvisors interested in a challenge, or dancers new to improvisation and open to learning post-modern improvisational conventions 'from the inside out'.

After warming up and practicing together we will take time to talk about the ways in which conventions and priorities in artistic practice are always inescapable. For example, as much as this method undoes some conventions, it underscores other conventions- chief among them the idea that rigor is of the highest importance. We will excavate 'rigor' as a concept, and as a tool, with time given for participants to move/think about the ways in which rigor may be applicable to their personal choreographic/improvisational practices.

While it is possible to drop in for select dates, participants will benefit from being able to accumulate information and practice over multiple classes.

↗️ LEVEL: Intermediate.
πŸ’² PAYMENT: Classes are pay-what-you-can, $15-$20 suggested, no one turned away for lack of funds

Get into a fun, energetic floorwork practice this fall!

🀸 Katherine Desimine and Nicole Connaughton: Floorwork
πŸ—“οΈ Wednesday mornings, 10-11:30AM (September, October, November)
πŸ“ Mascher Space (1170 S Broad St)

🟠 DESCRIPTION: Nicole and Katherine are excited to share their floorwork practices with you!!

Each class will begin with a thorough warmup that revs up gradually. Starting all the way on the ground, we will slowly work towards bearing weight on our hands, knees, and (sometimes) feet.

After a warm up in the center, we will begin to travel across the floor, continuing to warm in low-level and mid-level movements. We will move on to exercises to tune and train specific floorwork skills that will come back later in class in a larger phrase. We will have plenty of time to get into details of any sticky points that may arise- discussion and playtime will be had.

Skills trained in the across the floor exercises will then be utilized in a fun final movement phrase consisting of set material. This phrase will:

-utilize momentum and weight
-include lots of spiral-y, fluid movement
-emphasize smooth & easy transitions in and out of the floor
-get us sweatin!!!

Each class will be different, but there will be consistency in some skills and movement patterns, allowing participants coming back to grow in their practice. We will offer lots of variations, modifications, and speed options, to ensure the movement we are sharing is accessible to all experience levels.

Wear long sleeves and pants. Kneepads are highly recommended if you have them!!

πŸ“Έ Pixelations: A Multimedia Movement Workshop with Shosh and Claire
πŸ—“οΈ Monday nights, 7-8:30PM (September, October, November)
πŸ“ Mascher Space (1170 S Broad St)

🟠 DESCRIPTION: Exploring space, time and form, this class series is open to all ideas related to movement, media, and documentation. Claire and Shosh will lead this series; we are dancers, but we love all forms of art. Inspired by film, photography, and projection, we will include these elements to broaden the possibilities for multimedia performance art creation. This looks like workshopping movement concepts using photo, video, and projection technology. We will be moving, but absolutely no movement experience is necessary. We wish to connect folks from all art forms to movement and, in a salon style, explore what is possible.
