OUR MISSION:

Since 2003, Destyny’s mission is to maintain all the wonderful aspects of the Sphynx personality, health and genetics and the education of new owners. To maintain the personality, we will ensure that each cat is socialized with people and other animals and breed only those animals that have excellent temperaments. Males are separated from the females to maintain the integrity of the breeding program. Each and every cat's health will be maintained. The cats will live in clean and spacious living quarters. Cats will all receive the best medical care and be up-to-date on all examinations and vaccines. Each cat will be fed properly with the best quality food. Genetics are also important - we will do our best to ensure that cats are bred without genetic ailments or issues. We believe that healthy, socially well-adjusted cats are even more important than breeding a "show cat". We strive to breed the best possible show cats, however, healthy, well-socialized cats will ALWAYS be our first concern. There is a fine balance between trying to breed great show cats and providing wonderful healthy pets to good homes. While we do our best to ensure that each cat will be as healthy as can be - diseases and genetic defects are an unfortunate but natural part of any animal species - there is no one that can predict that. If there is a genetic issue, we will replace that cat (for 2 years). The final item that we will ensure is each cat that leaves our home goes to an excellent "cat educated" home. Prior to, during and after you adopt a cat from us, you may ask us any questions and as much advice as you wish. If we do not know the answer, we will do our best to find an answer for you. We want to provide you with all the information and help to make you and your cat happy and healthy.

Yesterday, I saw a social media post from a UK Sphynx pet owner who had her Sphynx diagnosed with HCM. In the post, it was laced with accusatory tone towards the breeder. In the post she states the breeder was reputable, but the tone that was not true now. We breeders can only do so much. Every health issue diagnosis a pet adopter gets, we feel it too. We hurt. We don’t want that for your pet- we want them to be perfect . However, the responsibly of breeder is not endless, nature, even with education and help, while it is mostly amazing, it is sometimes cruel. This is no one’s fault if they are trying. Some of us have agonized over heart disease for more than 20 years and done all we can to mitigate it. Scanning, using older males, outcrossing to permissible cats to improve heart health. Today, on social media, I saw this article written but Elaine Starry, a Rottweiler breeder. It seemed like a perfect time to share this. There needs to be more honesty and sharing. Those breeders who try their best… it’s all they can do. No matter the breed. There needs to be more community, helpfulness, kind and understanding. Lift people up. Do not destroy.

CNN article, pet food study finds toxins in 99% of pet food. All the “experts” and so many (often in condescending tone) say commercial pet food is the best and bully those who feed raw. For many years, many of us believed commercial food was dicey to use. The main motivator for pet food companies is profit, and with that usually comes shortcuts. so some of us made our own. Since 2008 here. If you can only afford to feed what you feed, that’s ok. Some people are limited and have considerations. The issue I have is when people say that commercial food is superior or that raw is not as good. Feed what you feed… I always say… I would love to crack open a bag of kibble and feed that as it’s so easy. But I see the results of balanced home made raw diet. It’s incredible. Even if you can add homemade raw 3x a week, I think you’d see a difference.

Being a breeder is truly so hard. I am finally posting here on ig with much sadness and shock. I lost my beautiful Devon Rex, Dina aka “the Dina-saur”

Dina was one of the best Devon Rex I ever had. Despite being told she was blood type A, when tested, she was blood type B. I was glad I didn’t know before I got her. If I had known she was B, I wouldn’t have gotten her, but I felt like it was destiny for her to be here. She was so affectionate and loving.

I found Dina not looking right and took her to the vet. She had dilated eyes and pale gums, so I knew something wasn’t right. At the vets, while receiving the best possible care, she ended up arresting and dying. One of the kittens died in utero and caused her to go septic extremely quickly.

This is just a sliver, this one being the worst outcome, of what breeders deal with.
