In our schools, that heritage is part of what makes our communities strong—reflected in the languages students speak, the stories they share, the traditions they carry forward and the many ways they contribute to our city.

Board members Whitney Jones and Joyce Wilkerson along with President Reginald Streater toured the Science and Leadership Academy this morning along with Superintendent Tony Watlington as part of the District's call for applications for the School Transition Committees that will support Accelerating Opportunity, the District's Facilities Master Plan. Senior Advisor Dr. Shakeera Warthen-Canty announced that opening of applications, and SLA Beeber students spoke about their excitement to have Parkway West students join them in the 2027-2028 school year under a merger of the two school communities. Parkway West will fold into SLA Beeber as a criteria-based Early Education Career and Technical Education (CTE) honors program.

Board VP Sarah-Ashley Andrews joined The School District of Philadelphia officials this morning in welcoming native daughter and fashion entrepreneur Milan Harris back to the city to share her success story with students at Dobbins High School. Andrews spoke about using creativity to achieve!

Kindergarten students at the Edwin Stanton Elementary School in South Philly walked the red carpet for their first day of today and Board Member ChauWing Lam cheered them on along with The School District of Philadelphia officials and representatives from Mayor's Office! They're off to a great school year.

The School District of Philadelphia Back-to-School Bus Tour wrapped up this weekend! 🚌🎒✨

We had a great time connecting with our amazing students and families along the way, sharing resources and getting everyone ready for the first day of school.

Now, the countdown is on! ⏰📚

We’re looking forward to welcoming students back on Monday, August 24, for the start of the 2026–27 school year!

Board Member Cubbage recently attended the Mayor’s Office of Education’s Early Credit Project meeting to learn about efforts to expand access to dual enrollment, AP, IB, and CTE programs for Philadelphia high school students.

Staying connected to these initiatives helps inform our work to ensure all students have access to the resources and pathways they need to succeed.

Today, Vice President Andrews joined The School District of Philadelphia's New Hire Orientation to welcome the newest teachers and counselors for the 2026–2027 school year.

As these educators prepare to begin the school year, we thank them for choosing to serve Philadelphia's students and families. Their dedication, passion, and commitment will make a lasting impact in classrooms and school communities across the city.

A special thank you to the Lincoln High School Band for helping kick off the day with an outstanding performance that brought energy and excitement to our newest educators' first day. 🎶
