Philadelphia Guild of Handweavers

PGHW fosters the fine craft of fiber arts through education and the exchange of ideas. It offers ample space for meetings, workshops and classes.

The Philadelphia Guild of Handweavers is a non-profit organization whose mission is to foster the art and craft of weaving and the fiber arts. We were organized in 1952 through the efforts of Joseph Acton, Bret Carberry, Ruth Dewees, Marion Lord, Helen Schobinger and Kathryn Wellman. In 1992, Russ Fawley, owner of Wilde Yarns, deeded the property at 3705 Main Street, Philadelphia, PA to the Guild.

This building is located in the Manayunk area of Philadelphia (across from the United Artist Theater) and is now the permanent headquarters for the Guild. Membership in the Guild offers not only the chance to increase learning but to be part of a community of other fiber artists. The Guild motto is “We Learn by Doing and Grow by Sharing”.

Join us this Thursday, September 10th from 7:00-8:30pm for a panel discussion on Fiber Arts and Social Change. We’re interpreting “social change” broadly by considering art as a tool for reshaping narratives, challenging and documenting history, discussing justice, encouraging civic and community engagement, aligning with social movements, breaking with established institutions, illuminating stories, fostering collaboration (between artists and the community), finding one’s voice, and visually expressing the public’s emotions.

A breathtaking celebration of cultural heritage and family tradition! For over eighty years, the women of the Crawford family passed down the intricate Gee's Bend quilting techniques across four generations, stitching family memories and civil rights stories into intricate fabric patterns. This week, the National Portrait Gallery acquired their master collection for permanent public exhibition. The matriarch of the family, ninety-four-year-old Mother Maeve, cut the ceremonial ribbon alongside her eight-year-old great-granddaughter. Share this to honor the beauty of ancestral craftsmanship!

Take a look at the work of Libby Raab, a paper weaver and licensed architect based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Raab views weaving as an inherently architectural act, a form of spatial expression and material experimentation. Just as her residential architecture prioritizes connection and intimacy, her artwork seeks the same personal resonance, inviting viewers into layered, tactile encounters with familiar imagery.
