This week, members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.® are connecting, fellowshipping, and representing at the 2026 National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Convention & Career Fair at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis in Atlanta, Georgia.

It’s always inspiring to see brothers coming together in spaces that celebrate Black excellence, professional achievement, leadership, journalism, communications, media, photography, broadcasting, and storytelling.

The NABJ Convention brings together talented professionals from across the country, creating opportunities to build relationships, exchange ideas, support each other, and continue opening doors for the next generation of Black media professionals.

Happy Birthday Founder George Wesley Edmonds!
George W. Edmonds, witty in nature and an enigma to most in the Fraternity, was born in Knight Township, Vandenburgh County, Indiana, on August 13, 1890.

He attended the Carver Elementary School and Clark High School in nearby Evansville, Indiana, and enrolled at Indiana University in the fall of 1910. He joined nine other students in founding Kappa Alpha Nu Fraternity. Founder Edmonds was listed as the Corresponding Secretary in the articles of incorporation of the Grand Chapter of Kappa Alpha Nu. He was one of the three freshmen, along with Asher and Blakemore, who were the first initiates of the Alpha of Kappa Alpha Nu.

After Edmonds returned home for the summer of 1911, he worked with the area coal mines and the railroad of Vanderburgh County. Edmonds married Willa Mae Forte and settled in Stevenson, Indiana. They became the parents of one son, Noel. Founder Edmonds died on June 13, 1962.

Founder Edward G. Irvin requested fraternity members locate Edmonds. His family members were contacted, and his burial site was rediscovered in 1978. The fraternity subsequently dedicated a marker in his honor.

Happy Birthday Founder Edward Giles Irvin!
Edward G. Irvin was born in Spencer, Indiana, on August 13, 1893.

Founder Irvin entered Indiana University in 1910. He did not return to the university following the spring term of 1911. After leaving school, he enlisted in the Army during World War I. While serving the U.S. Army during the war, he was cited for bravery while performing his duties as a combat medic with the Expeditionary Forces in France. He also served on the Selective Service Board during World War II and the Korean War. He received the 2nd highest medal that is given by this country for valor. He received two Distinguished Service Awards from President Truman and Eisenhower, respectively.

After the War, he joined the staff of the Indianapolis Freeman newspaper. Founder Irvin worked briefly as an editor at the Gary Sun newspaper before becoming sports editor at the Chicago Daily Bulletin newspaper. He also established the Indiana Shining Star weekly newspaper.

Founder Irvin pioneered the promotion of basketball and track athletics in small-town Indiana schools. He was an active member of the Methodist Church of Chicago and the Masonic and Odd Fellows Lodges. He founded and edited the lay newspaper Voice of the A.M.E. Laymen.

Founder Irvin met his wife, Maywilla, in Anderson, Indiana, and organized and operated the Afro-American Manufacturing Company in Chicago, which produced novelties, candies, and specialties.

Founder Irvin was a long-time Chicago (IL) Alumni Chapter member. He was the 24th Laurel Wreath Laureate, the highest award bestowed upon a member. The Fraternity named the most outstanding Undergraduate Chapter award in his honor.

The Fraternity’s last living Founder entered the Chapter Invisible on November 4, 1982.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. proudly celebrates Brother Damon O. Barry, Esq., a 1992 initiate of the Gamma Eta Chapter at the University of Washington, on being named a Titan 100 Honoree. The Titan 100 recognizes the fastest growing and most influential executives in the nation, with honorees nominated and selected annually and the pinnacle achievement reserved for Hall of Fame recognition in their third year.

Brother Barry serves as Office Managing Partner of Ballard Spahr LLP, where his leadership reflects a deep commitment to strategy, mentorship and organizational excellence. He has guided teams through complex challenges while strengthening collaboration across practice areas and preparing professionals for the evolving legal landscape. His approach to leadership centers on purpose, accountability and the collective success of the people he leads.

Within Kappa Alpha Psi, Brother Barry’s service runs deep. He is a past Province Polemarch for the Middle Western Province and currently serves on the Fraternity’s Grand Board of Directors as Alumni Grand Board Member. His recognition as a Titan 100 Honoree reflects the standard of excellence Kappa men continue to set in law, business and civic leadership nationwide.

Congratulations Brother Barry on this well deserved honor. Nupe excellence continues.
