These beautiful still life drawings relied on a reductive charcoal technique to portray a variety of different materials. Covering the entire drawing surface with charcoal and then using an eraser to create highlights and more charcoal to add deep shadows allows students to render objects without hard outlines, making the finished work all the more realistic.

These depictions of a seated model utilize both dark charcoal and light chalks and pastels on a midtone paper background. Just these three materials give students a range of values to work with, allowing them to portray highlights and shadows in a great amount of detail.
