All are welcome to join PennTESOL East’s Fall Advocacy Potluck on Thursday, September 24th from 5-8 PM!

Join us as we build a strong community of advocates for English language education and allies of English language learners! We’ll talk about some of the pressing issues facing English educators in K-12, adult ed, and higher ed. The PennTESOL East Advocacy Committee will also share some of our recent advocacy efforts, upcoming opportunities, and our priorities moving forward, in addition to discussing ways we can support each other. Let us know how PennTESOL East can support you as you navigate new realities with your learners.

Pictured here are presenters from a panel session during last year’s conference titled “Becoming Teachers in New Realities: Preservice Voices on Supporting English Learners.” This session was led by Penn State Abington education majors Kiarra Go, Alicia Lukens, Grace Menezes, Sadia Rahman, and Grace Thompson-Rodes in coordination with Dr. Roxanna Senyshyn, Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics and Communication Arts and Sciences, and Teri Dodaro, Assistant Teaching Professor and Field Experience Coordinator, of Penn State Abington. During this interactive and informative session, the students shared unique insights from their experiences as pre-service teachers working with multilingual learners in the School District of Philadelphia.

Abstract:
English language programs at higher education institutions are often an untapped resource of expertise across a range of areas, including academics, student services, marketing and recruitment, enrollment, and government regulations. Learning effective strategies for advocating on behalf of your program can create opportunities for cross-campus collaboration and position English language programs as valuable partners in advancing institutional strategic priorities. This session will focus on strategies for establishing your program’s expertise across campus, fostering interdepartmental collaboration, and integrating English language programs into institutional enrollment and retention goals.

Speaker Bio:
Jackie has over 30 years of experience in immigrant and international education in the United States and abroad, and over 20 years in higher education administration. With responsibilities ranging from teaching and teacher training to international partnership development and strategic initiatives, Jackie presents nationally and internationally sharing her breadth and depth of knowledge and expertise in the field. Currently, Jackie is Director of the Center for American Language & Culture at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, and President of EnglishUSA.

Registration for our fall conference, “Teaching with Purpose: Building Connection & Community,” is NOW OPEN! The discounted early-bird registration rate is available to members now through October 14th. Groups of five or more PTE members are welcome to register together to receive a discounted group rate. Registration is also open to non-members at this time, as well!

In addition, for the first time, PennTESOL East is now offering a limited number of scholarships to attend our fall conference! The scholarship is available to members who demonstrate a need for financial support in order to attend our annual conference on a first come, first served basis. Requests will be considered in the order they are received through September 20th, while funds remain available.
