Alexander Technique Philadelphia Ariel Weiss teaches the Alexander Technique online and in person through classes, lessons & more. www.atphila.com

The Alexander Technique is a time-proven method of helping people of all ages and occupations move more freely and comfortably, rid their bodies of tension, and even recover from injuries. Whether you're sitting at a computer all day or you're a performing artist, athlete, or senior citizen, the benefits of AT can help you realize your full potential and live a more comfortable life. I'm Ariel Weiss, and I completed my certification in the Alexander Technique in 1988. Through natural mind-body integration, I can show you how to break harmful everyday habits and more deeply connect with your performance craft, yourself, and others. Move free, think free, play free, feel free with the Alexander Technique.

Today we continue to explore the theme of agreement and repeat our experiment of looking in different directions with an eye on our “slinky” ribs.

Do you know what your ribs are doing when you look up and down?
I like to call them our “slinky” ribs to remind folks how flexible their ribs are - plus it’s cool to watch how when one side of the slinky ribs gets closer together (proximates) the other side opens!
This is a fun dynamic to experiment with your own flexible ribs -
Notice that when you look down, gently letting your front ribs close (proximate) opens your back and - Vice versa - looking up and allowing you back ribs to close allows the front to open 💃🏻

Now repeat the experiment side-bending and notice how the ribs softly come together on the side you are bending towards, allowing the opposite side to open fully.
Neat, right?

When we cultivate an inclusive attention, it can help us grow a cooperative mindset in relation to our own self as opposed to a competitive mindset. How can you shift your mindset to be in cooperative collaboration with yourself instead of competition?

How’d you do? You might notice that opening your slinky ribs opens your breathing 😊

Thank you, Fran!
Fran has been a “regular” - attending my online classes from the very beginning of the pandemic when AT Phila went online. Your commitment and consistency shows in how you’ve been about to integrate Alexander’s discoveries into your everyday life! We’ve made so many discoveries together and delighted in the small and steady improvements we’ve made.
I can’t wait to see what we discover next! 🤸🏿‍♀️
Are you ready to dive into a process of self-discovery?

Today we continue with our theme of “agreement” and finding
the “point of no-pull” with some gentle movements.

Try this experiment: Place your right hand on our left collar bone and then slowly look to your left - What did you notice? Was there a small pulling in towards the midline of your left collar bone as you looked to the left?
Now see what happens on the other side - we are often quite different and rarely symmetrical!

Now experiment with your hand on your collar bone gently suggesting “away” (that is away from your midline) first, and then adding in looking to the side as you continue to think out and away with your shoulder.
Did anything change?

Repeat the experiment by looking upwards - Do your collar bones have a sneaky habit of pulling downwards?
What happens if you gently invite them to roll upwards to follow your gaze?

Lots of folks told us to "stand up straight" and I assume they all meant well, but...

It really isn't how your body is built, and I personally have yet to see that cue help anyone 🤦🏻‍♀️

Helping you free up your buoyant postural balance is my passion - I even made a TEDx talk about it! Check out the link in my bio to watch it:
🎥 Posture myth-busting: it's easier than you think.

Today's Mindful Moment invites us to find a calm sense of cohesion - or what I like to call "agreement".

Take a moment and allow your eyes to wander and take in the space around you - turning first right, then left. Take your time and proceed gently - notice if there is a point where you have a small pull in your neck or shoulder, and then back up to what I call the "point of no-pull". Repeat moving your eyes and head side to side to the point of no-pull.
You can expand the exploration by looking in all directions - above, behind, below and all around.
Notice that the more inclusive you are with your attention and allowing your whole body follow where your eyes travel helps you find a larger range of "no-pull" motion ❤️

Drop a comment: Did you find your "point of no-pull"? What did you learn about your habits?

Most tension shows up before we even start playing, in the rush to get going. These three small habits create a moment of ease before performance, so you start centered instead of braced.

Try this sequence before your next rehearsal and notice the difference.

YES, YOU CAN. ✨

Move with more ease.
Let go of unnecessary tension.
Try something new.
Trust your body to learn.

Sometimes, the first step is simply believing that change is possible.

Discomfort is part of being human.

The Alexander Technique can help you notice how you respond to tension, stress, and everyday challenges, giving you more choice in how you move and respond.

You don’t have to feel comfortable all the time. You just have to know you can handle what comes next.

Welcome back to Mindful Moments!
Let's talk about the physical space we inhabit

Take a moment to locate yourself:
⬆️⬇️ Top to bottom (head to toes)
➡️⬅️ Front to back (your depth)
↔️ Side to side (your widening dimension)

When we take a moment to truly locate ourselves in our bodies, things start to shift.

👇 Tell me in the comments: When you do this exploration, what changes in you? Does your breath deepen? Does your vision soften? Let’s chat below!
