“Why aren’t you just working on their handwriting?”

Every school-based OT has probably heard some version of this question.

The answer isn’t that handwriting doesn’t matter. It does. But handwriting is one piece of a much larger picture.

Our job is to look at the student, the environment, and the tasks they need to perform — from the classroom and playground to specials, peer interactions, curriculum access, accommodations, independence, and yes, written work.

The shift in language is important:

Handwriting is a tool for participation and function — not the entire purpose of OT.
