Simon Gratz High School was built in 1925 in Philadelphia, Pa. Through their rigorous and diverse academic and athletic programs, the school became very notable in the city of Philadelphia. Such programming produced some of the most renowned politicians, musicians, athletes, and judicial members. Civil Rights activist Lee Akers, MLB player Roy Campanella, NBA player Mardy Collins and Rasheed Walla
ce, Congressman William H. Hymovitz and Neef Buck, and former school board president Herman Mattleman are among the distinguished members of the Gratz community. In August 2011 Simon Gratz welcomed aboard Mastery Charter School whose mission was for all students to learn the academic and personal skills they need to succeed in higher education and to pursue their dreams. Through this partnership, Simon Gratz has transcended into one of the best comprehensive, open-enrollment high schools in Philadelphia. Currently, Simon Gratz has an enrollment total of 1,450 students in grades 7 through 12. Gratz has more than doubled its college enrollment rate under Mastery and has been recognized by the local and national media for its remarkable turnaround in student performance and school safety.
