Dear Friends, Colleagues, Students, and Alums,
Do you know a high school student from a traditionally marginalized or under-represented group who is interested in majoring in physics?
If so, we've got an exciting event they may be interested in. Physics majors Soukayna Mardas and Dmitri LaBelle will be hosting a virtual open house on underrepresented communities in physics. Details below. Please forward to anyone who might be interested.
-----
Dear Future Physicist,
Do you think like the “stereotypical” scientist looks like you? When you look around the room in your physics class, do you feel that no one else shares your experiences? If so, we’d like to talk!
On November 14th, at 11am ET, the Drexel University Women in Physics Society and the Department of Physics will co-host a virtual Open House on the challenges underrepresented communities in physics face. Your hosts will be Soukayna Mardas (Drexel Physics 2023, and President of the Women in Physics Society) and Dmitri LaBelle (Drexel Physics 2024). They will talk about their educational paths, challenges along the way, and the communities that they have built. They will also talk about how, in recent years, the Drexel Physics program has grown and adapted itself to create a more inclusive environment.
We recognize that we cannot expect to anticipate everyone’s experiences, so please feel free to bring thoughts and questions from your own journey.
Students who attend the event will be given a virtual coupon to waive the Drexel application fee. If you apply afterwards, on the Common Application or the Coalition Application, simply select the “Drexel University Fee Waiver - waiver directly from the University” option.

We hope you will be able to join us. If you are planning on attending, please RSVP by sending an email to Prof. Dave Goldberg (email below).
Sincerely,
Soukayna Mardas (She/her)

Hi Physics Friends!
Our fundraiser for The Evoluer House is almost over. We want to thank everyone who has participated and encourage those who want to be involved. For those who want to contribute, but have not yet been able to, you still have the chance to contribute! Unfortunately, as we have reached our matching capacity, donations collected from now on will not be matched. This does not mean that your donations won’t have an impact; every amount donated is important in supporting the academic and professional development of highschool girls in Philadelphia.
To contribute please Venmo our president, Soukayna, at -Mardas or reach out to our page if another method would work better for you.
Thank you!

Hi Physics students and friends!
In response to recent events, WiPS would not only like to extend our support to the black community but also to those on the front lines fighting for reform! While expressing verbal support is important, we know that actions speak louder than words. Due to this we are hosting a fundraiser for The Evoluer House and asking for your support for this important project. The Evoluer House is a Philadelphia based organization that provides academic and professional development for highschool girls in the area.
If you would like to contribute, please Venmo our President, Soukayna -Mardas

For rising Junior or Senior Women Undergraduates!
The Department of Physics at Caltech invites you to nominate your top rising Junior or Senior Women Undergraduates who are interested in pursuing a PhD in Physics to participate in FUTURE, an all-expenses paid, two-day event at Caltech from October 14 – 15, 2019. Participants of FUTURE will have an opportunity to engage in intimate big picture science discussions with Caltech faculty, attend panel discussions on topical research areas as well as on graduate student life, receive personalized guidance on how to navigate the graduate school and graduate fellowship application process through mini-workshops, and network with a cohort of talented women in physics. The goal of FUTURE is to support the ambitions of aspiring young women in physics, who will go on to become part of a diverse generation of scientific leaders.
We are requesting that you complete a very short nomination form, which can be accessed through our website: pma.caltech.edu/FUTURE. Nominations are due by Aug. 7, 2019.
Please distribute this announcement among your colleagues and encourage them to nominate their top junior or senior undergraduate women who are interested in pursuing a PhD in Physics. The student does not have to be from the same university as the nominator and does not have to be a U.S. citizen or a U.S. based student (we welcome you to nominate a student you may know through a research collaboration, visit, etc.). We strongly prefer nominations from faculty but will also consider nominations from non-faculty. Please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions about the event.
We encourage nominations of women from minority backgrounds. We use an inclusive definition of “woman” and “female” and welcome trans women, genderqueer women, and non-binary people.
Sincerely,
Dave and Mia
