On this day of Black History Month, we celebrate Henry Ossawa Tanner! He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1859. As a teen, he was inspired to become an artist and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. 🎨
He then moved to Paris and pulled inspiration from the different art movements emerging there. He is known mostly for his depictions of Black and religious subjects; one of his most famous pieces being ‘The Banjo Lesson’ (shown above).
