On this day of Black History Month, we celebrate Henry Ossawa Tanner! He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1859. As a teen, he was inspired to become an artist and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. 🎨

He then moved to Paris and pulled inspiration from the different art movements emerging there. He is known mostly for his depictions of Black and religious subjects; one of his most famous pieces being ‘The Banjo Lesson’ (shown above).

On this day of Black History Month, we honor Octavius Catto, an educator and civil rights advocate based in Philadelphia. ✏️✊🏾His dedication to Umoja, or unity, can be seen in every aspect of his life and work.
