What happens when the people teaching the next generation of nurses are also actively shaping the future of practice?

As Penn Nursing’s Pamela Z. Cacchione, PhD, CRNP, BC, FGSA, FAAN, uts it, “Some of our best educators and most awarded educators are those that are still embedded in practice.”

Staying connected to practice keeps our educators close to the patients, families, communities, and health care challenges they teach about every day. That experience brings real-world insight into the classroom—and helps prepare students to translate the science of nursing into meaningful impact.

Hear from Dr. Cacchione about the value of educators who remain engaged in practice and explore more stories from Penn Nursing faculty who are putting their expertise into action. Watch the Penn Nursing’s Practice in Action series. https://bit.ly/3VvJLQF

Extreme heat is no longer just a public health issue—it is an immediate hospital preparedness priority.
A new editorial in Public Health Nursing from Penn Nursing’s Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research (CHOPR) calls on health systems to treat nurse staffing and supportive work environments as essential emergency infrastructure.
Authors Eileen T. Lake, PhD, RN, FAAN, Domenique Villani, MPH, RN, and Ysabella Perez, BA, emphasize that managing heat-related illness requires rapid, resource-intensive nursing surveillance. Their message to healthcare leaders: building true climate resilience requires investing directly in the bedside nursing workforce.

What happens when nursing knowledge moves into action?

At Penn Nursing, it can transform care, improve systems, drive innovation, and shape what comes next in health.

Our "Practice in Action" video series brings you inside the work of Penn Nursing faculty, students, alumni, and clinical partners who are putting expertise to work across clinical settings, health systems, research, and communities.

From behavioral health and care transitions to technology, quality improvement, and new models of care, the series shows the many ways nurses are leading change. Because nursing is not only about delivering care. It is about asking better questions, designing better solutions, and building a healthier future.

Solving the global nursing shortage isn't just about recruiting new nurses—it’s about transforming the environments where they care for patients every single day.
On September 18, Penn Nursing’s Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research (CHOPR), Penn Medicine, Penn LDI, and TruMerit came together to host a global symposium on nursing workforce solutions and patient safety.
Healthcare leaders—including UPHS CEO Kevin Mahoney, International Council of Nurses (ICN) leaders Howard Catton and David Stewart, and Penn Nursing's own Antonia Villarruel, PhD, Linda Aiken, PhD, Matt McHugh, PhD, and Selena Gilles, DNP—shared crucial insights on addressing nurse burnout through better workplace support.
The event also highlighted results from Magnet4Europe, an innovative project that paired 65 European hospitals with U.S. Magnet facilities to redesign care environments and raise quality standards worldwide.
Special thanks to Hoag Levins, Editor at Penn’s LDI, for capturing this important conversation!
