The Tyler School of Art Summer Painting and Sculpture Intensive (SPI/SSI) is pleased to announce its 2017 Summer Group Show, titled “ETC….”

This exhibition is the culmination of the seven-week program and features work made during that time. Tyler is pleased to partner with the artist cooperative New Boone, which is hosting the show at its exhibition space this year.

Participants in the SPI/SSI, now in its 7th year, come to the program from across the United States and abroad and participate in numerous seminars and critiques, as well as welcoming many visiting artists and critics throughout their time at Tyler. Over the course of the program, students continue to develop their unique practices through studio time, one-on-one studio visits and group discussions.

The group of students in the 2017 SPI/SSI is particularly impressive in the scope of their ambition.

Briget Heidmous’ work engages in, and references, research found in the sciences and has materialized to form an epic series of 500 drawings and numerous large paintings on paper.

Rebecca Levinson’s paintings seem to constantly re-configure themselves; they are cut apart and patched back together again in surprising and remarkable ways.

Zipporah Lee Norton’s physical, gestural and massive paintings imply the action and strength of the body while being open and fluid.

Courtney Odell’s works on panels seem to expand the way cells do: self-fueling, multiplying and growing like new life forms.

Brian Palmieri has been at work on a tremendous series of paintings and works on paper that feel immediate and urgent while harkening back to the grandest traditions of American abstract painting.

Myungjin Song’s works on paper and canvas depict a visual language of accumulated dots, dashes and lines that reveal images just being formed.

Henry Stoehr’s paintings on paper and canvas straddle the perceived divide between recognizable
symbols and images and pure abstraction, revealing a visual catalog of forms that investigates our notions
of innocence, adulthood, and the reliability of our own perception.

And finally, Terence Wong’s practice includes a vast series of drawings done with walnut ink on paper,
plaster objects and other forms multiplied again and again through an almost performative process that
seems to recall his earlier creative output as a trained musician.

We hope you will join us for this important exhibition.
