Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (now part of Saint Joseph's) was founded in 1821

The Philadelphia College of Pharmacy's vision is to be globally recognized for excellence in advancing compassionate, evidence-based patient care through interprofessional collaboration inspiring innovations in education, research and practice. To reach that vision, P*P offers the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree, a BS/MS/PhD in Pharmacology/Toxicology, and BS/MS/PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The Philadelphia College of Pharmacy’s PharmD curriculum is designed with the student learner at the center of the learning experience, with flexibility for the student both in the two year pre-professional phase, as well as in the four year competency-driven professional phase. It is aligned with the needs of today’s employers and patients to best prepare student pharmacists to be team-ready and practice-ready in order to provide confident and collaborative patient-focused care, leadership, and innovation in all pharmacy environments upon graduation. Students can enter the PharmD program directly from high school, or as transfer students into the pre-professional of professional phase of the curriculum. A baccalaureate degree is conferred to eligible students in transit to the doctorate.

Our P1s have started their labs! This week, our P1s are learning about blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, insulin pens, glucose monitors, and preparing to counsel patients on their medications! The students were able to try out the devices so they are able to adequately counsel patients, take blood pressure, and understand what patients who use the devices daily experience. Hands-on learning is always part of the pharmacy curriculum and helps students become drug and medical device experts!

Peer mentoring plays a longstanding and vital role in supporting our new P1 students as they begin their pharmacy education journey. Our P2 peer mentors and P1 students came together to connect, share experiences, and begin building relationships that will support a successful year ahead! Your leadership and commitment to mentoring blossoming P1 students help ease their transition into pharmacy school and prepare them for what's ahead!

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗖𝗣 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗫 𝘀𝘆𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲.
Dr. Jason Wallach, Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences in P*P at Saint Joseph's University, is partnering with Dr. Clinton Canal of Mercer University and PharmD/PhD student India Breuer to develop novel compounds that may reduce seizures and support learning and memory without the unwanted hallucinogenic effects. Building on encouraging findings in a Fragile X mouse model, the team will design and evaluate new tryptamine-based molecules that selectively engage brain receptors capable of calming overactive neurons. Their work brings together pharmacology, neuroscience, medicinal chemistry, and drug development to help identify safer, targeted therapeutic candidates.

A nice start of the semester with our Pharmaceutical Sciences & Drug Development and PharmTox undergrads in their Introduction to Laboratory Techniques in Biomedicine lab PHS 302 learning the skills and importance of precision and consistent pipetting techniques in drug development with their DPS Professor Dr Harvison!
We will follow this student cohort and their progress and spotlight some important science throughout the semester!

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is excited to welcome our new and returning graduate students back to campus for the start of the Fall semester!
Our Graduate Student Welcome & Fall Kickoff meeting provided an opportunity to welcome students to the University, connect with faculty and peers, and prepare for the academic year ahead. We discussed important department-wide plans and priorities for the semester, shared helpful tips and resources to support students throughout the year, and provided guidance on navigating the academic and professional aspects of graduate school.

The meeting also gave students an opportunity to ask questions, raise concerns, and connect directly with faculty as they begin or continue their graduate journey. We are looking forward to a productive and successful semester and are excited to see what our graduate students accomplish this year!

Earlier this month our Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) student chapter attended the National Pharmaceutical Association (NPhA)/SNPhA Annual Convention. Our students participated in organization governance, attended professional development sessions, and connected with alumni throughout the conference. The Prescription for Service team, a group of students who received a generous grant from Walmart and Sam's Club to sponsor their asthma education initiative, presented the impact of their work to judges and placed fifth in the national competition! Students were also recognized for their second place finish in the inaugural national Cancer Clarity Challenge where they combated cancer misinformation through evidence-based education, community outreach, and measurable impact reporting!

Today marked the end of Orientation Week for the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy Class of 2030! 🥳

It was a wonderful week of getting to know one another, learning more about the PharmD program, and exploring the many possibilities within the pharmacy profession. We’d like to thank the faculty, staff, and students who helped make this week a successful introduction to professional pharmacy school for our new P1 class! 🤩

Shout out to our summer interns: Patrick Branley (class of 2027, Environmental Sciences major), Owen Monson (class of 2028, History major), and Nannsi Villa (class of 2026, Criminal Justice major). Last Friday, Patrick and Nannsi presented their digital humanities final projects: a GIS animation and StoryMap showing 200+ years of pharmaceutical company mergers cultivating in the Merck multinational company. For his internship, Owen created exhibition content on Lilly and Co. and Pelham Pharmacy, on display in our museum. Come explore these student projects and more in the museum's new exhibition "Between Two Rivers: 250 Years of Pharmacy in Philadelphia," on view at the Marvin Samson Museum for the History of Pharmacy sju.edu/pharmacymuseum
