Monarch overwintering numbers have been released today for the eastern monarch, and this season's numbers are higher than last year's.
The WWF-Telmex Telcel Foundation Alliance, in collaboration with the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP), the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve (MBBR), announced the total forest area occupied by overwintering monarch colonies today. Nine colonies were located this winter season with a total area of 2.93 hectares, a 64% increase from the previous season (1.79 hectares).
You can view details on our blog post, "Monarch Population Status," at monarchwatch.org/blog (or find the link in the comments). We'll post more details there as they become available.

Yes, I march for peace and stand against war. I march for the rights and protections for children, women, immigrants, and those marginalized by the color of their skin and their identity. I refuse to stand by silently and let the faux-gilded atrocities wrought by the U.S. government persist without pushing back. If you canβt be there, for whatever reason, Iβll be there for you, to the best of my ability. In the meantime Iβll be in preschool doing the thing I do best as an early childhood educator raising the next generation (since 1987!). Donβt worry. Stay safe. 8 million of us have your back. No Kings. NO funds for π§or the war machine. Period. 3.30.2026

This jar, in the back of my refrigerator. Labeled, in case someone else needed to know or in case I forgot. Well, here we are (so grateful for each day the Universe offers me) and it is time to put them in the terrarium and warm them up. Letβs try and hatch some little things. 3.15.2026

Theyβre on their way northβ¦and for the Mexicans, itβs a bittersweet adios. Thank you for sharing this natural wonder with us and for the partnership we share in protecting this amazing phenomenon!
To this day, I still have no words. Just awe.
