OTHER WORLDS ARE POSSIBLE—OPENING RECEPTION THIS FRIDAY!

OPENING RECEPTION AND ARTIST TALK, FRIDAY, APRIL 3, 6:00-7:30PM

Multiverse
8026 Germantown Ave Philadelphia, PA, 19118 United States

DISPLAY APRIL 3, 2026 THROUGH MAY 8TH, 2026

“The exercise of imagination is dangerous to those who profit from the way things are because
it has the power to show that the way things are is not permanent, not universal, not
necessary.”—Ursula K. Leguin, science fiction author

Members of the Delaware Valley Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers have created original works and books arts for Other Worlds Are Possible–a window-display exhibition inspired by our store’s speculative fiction focus. The exhibition features handmade book art by 10 artists, exploring the themes of imagination and creativity that books allow.

At a time when books are being banned and reading curricula censored, speculative fiction offers space to dream together about better worlds. How can book arts help tell the stories we need most right now? How can the structure of a book itself suggest possibility, hope, or change?

We had a lovely trip out to visit Historic Rittenhouse Town to see some of their treasurers. This was in preparation for our exhibit going up this summer. We can’t thank them enough for hosting.

Material World Call for Entries 03/13/2024

Call for Entries: Material World

The Delaware Valley Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers is seeking submissions for "Material World," an exploration of materiality of the book form. The challenge is to use non-traditional mediums and structures. Books, as most people know them, are made of a pretty short list of materials: paper, leather, parchment, silk thread, linen thread, and board. Think outside the book! Have you been collecting something with the plan to make something? Now is your time to use it.

The Exhibition will be on display on the first floor at the Van Pelt Library of the University of Pennsylvania.

June 21, 2024 - Books Due
