February is Black History Month - we want to pause and reflect on how African American innovators have shaped childhood and childcare in powerful ways! Here’s a few prominent people:

📚After becoming emancipated, Betsey Stockton traveled extensively, establishing schools for Hawaiian children and adults on Maui, and preschools for African American children in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her story shows how one teacher engaged with new approaches to teaching young children and positively impacted the lives of hundreds of children and their families over several generations.

💡Educators like Mary McLeod Bethune and Lucy Craft Laney expanded access to quality education for young Black children, while inventors like Lonnie Johnson (the Super Soaker) brought joy through play and Garrett Morgan improved child safety with the modern traffic signal.

Their legacy lives on in how children learn, play, and thrive today. 🖤📚🧸
