Jefferson jumped in several major categories in the latest U.S. News and World Report 2027 Best Colleges rankings.

The University climbed four spots to No. 47 in the country for Best Value Schools and 10 places to No. 100 for Top Performers on Social Mobility. These rankings cement Jefferson in the top 25% in both categories. In addition, Jefferson improved five spots in Best Colleges for Veterans.

Jefferson also maintained its rank in the top third of National Universities and, in a new category, placed among the top 36% of private schools in the country.

“We prepare students for the future of work through our novel approach to teaching and learning, which is grounded in collaborative, hands-on, immersive experiences across interconnected professions and disciplines,” says University President Dr. Susan Aldridge, noting that the improved rankings wouldn’t be possible without the efforts of the entire University community. “Thank you to all our faculty and staff for supporting our students and making Jefferson a wonderful place to learn.”

In addition, Jefferson saw major positive moves in Niche’s 2027 Best Colleges in America — most notably, soaring 159 spots to No. 206. This jump places the University among the top 14% nationally.

Among the other major Niche categories, Jefferson rocketed 43 spots to No. 153 in Best Value Colleges (top 11% nationally) and 432 places to No. 208 for Best College Locations (top 14% nationally).

Jefferson also vaulted into the top 10% for Best Colleges for Nursing, ranking No. 76 in the U.S. — a 25-spot jump. Plus, Niche ranked Jefferson No. 45 for Best Colleges for Architecture and No. 106 for Best Colleges for Design.

Why did you choose Jefferson?
🌆 I had just moved to Philadelphia and had been working as a planner in New Jersey for the past year. I wanted to learn more about the private side of development to become more well-rounded in the field. Jefferson offered an extraordinary opportunity to learn the logistics of real estate development, and it has introduced me to countless knowledgeable experts along the way.

The name Herbert Kean is synonymous with greatness at Jefferson. What began as a residency in otolaryngology in 1957 grew into a distinguished tenure as a renowned clinician, surgeon, professor, faculty member, mentor, and generous benefactor.

Not only did Dr. Kean help build the department and create its premier centers for head and neck surgery and plastic surgery, but he has also continued to support efforts to keep Jefferson at the forefront of patient care, research, and physician education through philanthropy.

In 2001, he established the Herbert Kean, MD, Chair in Otolaryngology; in 2006, he created the Herbert Kean, MD, Otolaryngology Residency Education and Research Fund; and in 2008, he started the Herbert Kean, MD, Center for Facial Aesthetics. In 2021, Dr. Kean and his wife, The Hon. Joyce Kean, made a $5 million gift to support the Department of Otolaryngology in Jefferson’s Honickman Center.

Dr. Kean, now 94, recently sat down with Dr. David Cognetti, the Herbert Kean, MD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Jefferson, to reminisce, talk shop, discuss philanthropy, and impart the wisdom he’s garnered throughout his seven decades as a physician.

👋 Meet Dr. Thana Theofanis, a 2014 Sidney Kimmel Medical College graduate and now Clinical Assistant Professor in Jefferson’s Department of Neurosurgery.

How do you mentally prepare for a surgery where the margins for error are measured in millimeters?
🧠 I feel fortunate to have trained in a high-volume, demanding residency program. I credit my time as a Jefferson neurosurgery resident with preparing me to independently manage complex neurosurgical cases as an attending physician.

I actively rehearse the operation in my mind, not just the ideal sequence, but potential variations. I think through where critical structures may be more or less challenging than expected, and where I might need to adapt the plan intraoperatively. Contingency planning is an important part of how I stay grounded when margins of error are measured in millimeters.

At the same time, I don’t lose sight of the responsibility that comes with these cases. The weight of it is always present, but I channel that into focus and discipline to achieve the best possible clinical outcome for each patient.

For 15 years, Thursdays on Jefferson’s East Falls Campus have meant one thing: chicken fingers. 🍗

What started in 2011 with students asking Dining Services to add chicken fingers to the menu quickly became a beloved campus tradition.

Today, staff prepare and serve about 500 pounds of fresh, hand-breaded chicken fingers every Thursday, including vegan, halal, and gluten-free options. And, of course, there are plenty of dipping sauces to choose from.

Kensington neighbors show what’s possible when a community comes together. 🌱

Through a $17,000 grant received by Klean Kensington from a cohort of Jefferson’s Park in a Truck, Trash Academy, Circular Philadelphia, and Glitter — with support from the William Penn Foundation — this once garbage-filled corner at Shelbourne and E. Willard Streets will become a pollinator-themed garden.

Alongside community partners, local teens serve as park ambassadors, helping plan activities and working hands-on to beautify the space.

This summer, fashion design student Emily Mucci interned with Class of 2017 grad Madison Chamberlain, thanks to the Jefferson community and its alumni network.

During her internship, Emily gained valuable hands-on experience, expanded her professional network, and learned firsthand from an alumna who has built her own creative career.
