Kline’s BA in Law is rooted in the idea that legal rules have to be understood in practice, not just in theory. When Black Lives Matters protesters marched in New York City in the summer of 2020 they were met by police who used violence, sound cannons, and arrests to break up demonstrations. Kline professor Elena Cohen is a practicing attorney and represented protestors in a historic class action lawsuit, Sow, et al. v. City of New York, et al. The suit resulted in a settlement of more than $13 million and substantial reforms to the NYPD’s protest policies, including banning “kettling” and the use of low-flying helicopters to intimidate protestors.
