Kindness abounds at Wissahickon!

At our Fernhill campus, positivity is written on the walls…

At Awbury, our kindergartners spread kindness across the school as part of Autism Awareness Month!

Keep being kind, Wissahickon!

Last week, WCS Fernhill students participated in a peaceful, organized march for Martin Luther King Day!Groups marched to designated areas on campus, where they stood together holding signs in quiet reflection before returning to the building.

Says WCS Dir. of Technology Ish Bradley, who helped organize the event, “We wanted to help students understand the power of peaceful protest and advocacy. Teach them that their voices matter and that they can express their hopes for their community and the world in positive, respectful ways rooted in Dr. King’s legacy. The end goal was to have students leave the experience understanding that advocacy does not have to be loud, angry, or divisive to be powerful. And that by marching together, they learn that collective action, grounded in respect and empathy, can bring visibility to shared hopes and inspire positive change.”

What a powerful and meaningful moment for the school community!

The display outside our fourth grade classrooms perfectly captures how our teachers make learning meaningful through cross-curricular connections. This fall, fourth graders explored poetry in ELA and then carried that learning over to Discovery Class, our weekly environmental education course. In the spirit of conservationist Rachel Carson, their first Discovery hike of the semester became an inspiration walk for their poetry. This experience reflects our shared belief that nature sparks curiosity and wonder.

It was a powerful day in 4th grade this week as our budding poets welcomed spoken-word legend and WCS alumni parent Ursula Rucker into their classroom! Students have been diving into poetry in ELA, and several even performed their own work to Ursula and their classmates — And two are sharing their poems again for this social media post! Scroll through to the end to hear two great poems from 4th graders Alaysia and Carson.

One of our most joyful trips here at WCS is undoubtedly the annual Farms for City Kids trip. Select students in grades 4-6 spend a week at a working farm in Vermont, a trip made possible in part by WissaGIVING funds.

Throughout the week, students are immersed in farm life, participating in most of the daily operations. They milk cows and feed chickens, pick apples from the orchard, and even make cheese! The experience helps students build on their academic skills as well as social-emotional skills like teamwork, communication, respect and responsibility.

While programming for this trip is provided to us at no cost, we must still pay for transportation and staffing, both of which add up quickly.

Help us keep traditions like this one alive by donating to WissaGIVING before midnight on November 7th! Link in bio and stories

💙 Exciting news for WissaGIVING Week!

Wissahickon Foundation member Flynn Corson is generously matching every dollar donated today and tomorrow (Nov 4-5) — up to $10,000! 🔗 Give today at the link in our bio & stories

That means your gift goes twice as far to bring Joy and Comfort to Wissahickon students and families — supporting joyful learning experiences and school traditions and meeting essential needs like food, winter coats, and backpacks.

These matching funds are in addition to our $20,000 campaign goal, so your gift now has even greater impact.

Help us make the most of this opportunity and keep our shelves — and our students’ spirits — full. 💙

WissaGIVING is here with a new expanded focus! Link in bio and stories to give.

The pause on SNAP benefits means many families in our community are facing greater hardship.

That’s why this year’s WissaGIVING Campaign will now support Joy AND Comfort at Wissahickon.

Your gift this week will help provide both the joy of school field trips and celebrations — and the comfort of food and other essential needs for our families facing a tough moment.

Author , who just published her book , came to visit Awbury’s fourth grade to teach them about writing and reading verse novels, a topic they are covering in their ELA class. Students just finished reading the verse novel and were thrilled to learn more from an expert!
