We are in full Chanukah mode at CCJP! Friends are learning the dreidel song as they spin until they drop, serving up the most delicious donuts, and working hard on creating Menorahs to bring home!

The Menorah is a very prominent symbol in Judaism. In the times of the Temple, they would light the Menorah every day. Antiochus, the king of the Greeks, did not like that the Jews held fast to their own traditions, and to show his anger, along with banning any religious practice, seized the temple and destroyed much of what was inside!

When the Maccabees, the brave Jewish soldiers defeated the Greek army and reclaimed the temple, the first thing they did was try to clean up and set up the menorah to light. Sadly, all their jugs of pure, sealed oil were broken. They only found one sealed jug. It would take 8 days to travel and make pure oil, fit to be used in the Temple.

They decided to light it, with fervent hope that all would be ok. And- it was a Miracle! The lights burned for 8 full days, until the new oil arrived!

One lesson I love to pull out from this miraculous story, is the power of believing in a potential beyond the natural limits. When it comes to children, adults often box them into lowered expectations by giving answers, finishing off sentences when they take time to find the words, or helping them up a step when it’s taking them a bit longer than is comfortable to watch.
