Terrell Bush is a senior Media & Communication major with a minor in journalism. He is also key player a defensive back for the sprint football team. Terrell was able to explain how being a Media & Communication major benefits him on and off the field, “Being a communications major has helped with my football career in a multitude of ways. Being a vocal leader on my team is key for me to be able to communicate to the first man on our roster all the way to the last and instill a level of confidence to where we feel we can win any game.”

Terrell also revealed, “Media and communication is important in regards to athletics because without effective communication no team can be successful. Communication throughout a team is key in making sure everyone knows what they are doing, because if one person does not the whole team struggles. Regardless of how good a person is a team’s success is predicated on good communication.”

For this Saturday Spotlight we have 2019 graduate, Lauren Lau! Lauren majored in Media & Communication concentrated in journalism with a minor in marketing. She now works at digital convienence retailer, goPuff as a Driver Onboarding Specialist. During her four years at CHC, Lauren wrote for the Griffin and two of those years were spent as the Editor-in-Chief.

When asked about her career, Lauren explained,”I knew I wanted to stay in Philadelphia so I was really interested in the company I work for now. There’s so much growth opportunity and so many experiences you gain from working at rapid growing company. It allows me to be in an environment with coworkers who have the same ambitious attitude like me!”

She discussed how the Media & Communication department prepared her,
“Communications is such a great field of study because of how broad it is. At CHC, I was able to take classes for multiple areas for communications and media. It gave me a chance to find where my interests are. The department helped me find what my strengths and weaknesses are, which has been extremely helpful with resume building and interviewing.”

Lauren explained her most helpful class,
“Research methods really helped me improve my writing. It gave me such a greater attention to detail through developing my own senior seminar project and reading the work of my peers. I would also say Persuasion and Propaganda was helpful for my career. Working in groups and public speaking has been recurring in my career. I interact with new people everyday whether it be in person, video chatting, or email. Being comfortable and confident while engaging with others at work plays a huge role in my career.”

For this weeks Saturday Spotlight we have Christopher Sivel from the class of 2018. Christopher was a Political Science and Corporate Communication double major with a minor in Global Affairs. He now works for Retirement Media, inc. as a Research Journalist and Copy Writer. On the side he also is the Executive Director for two side projects of his own — a venture capitalist company called the Universal Strategic Network and a nonpartisan political non-profit called America Rethink.

During his undergraduate years at CHC, Christopher was Vice President of CHC-TV & the Griffin News, where he was the lead anchor for all four years. He produced video spotlights for different departments at the college for prospect students.

When asked why he chose his career he explained, “I chose the job I have now because it was a perfect blend of everything that I learned and participated in while I was a student. I conduct a lot of research and write informative articles about finances and retirement issues. Other parts of my job include writing reports for the radio and scripts for television commercials, so I get a perfect blend of the marketing concepts I learned as a Corporate Communications major as well as a Political Science major since a lot of retirement-related topics depend heavily on policies from state and federal legislators.”

Christopher discussed how the Media & Communication Department prepared him staring, “The communication department at Chestnut Hill College was so hands-on I was able to get involved from day one and hone in on my interviewing, writing, and researching skills for the work that I do now at work.”

He described his most helpful class, “probably my research methods and senior seminar because I was able to apply concepts that I had learned in other communication classes and put that all together for my research at the end of my college career. Because I applied all of these concepts and blend that into my research capabilities I was privileged to have two of my research papers published by the College which I then used to supplement my resume.”

For our third Spotlight Saturday we have Jordan (Jordie) Clark! Jordie was a Communication & Journalism major and graduated in 2019. During her undergraduate years, she was an editor for the sports section in The Griffin, and also created her own show for CHC-TV, titled Jordie’s Way. She now works for 47abc, as a News Reporter and Producer.

She explained her career choice saying, “I’ve always known since high school I wanted to be in front of the camera as a journalist. The idea of giving a voice to people who otherwise might not be heard was a true passion of mine. I love to tell stories and share with the community what they need to know.”

Jordie discussed how the Media & Communication department prepared her for her career and explained, “When I attended CHC, I received hands on learning with cameras and editing software that I may not otherwise get at a bigger college. I got one-on-one training with professors and fellow peers in the communications department. It really prepared me for my new job!”

She recalled her most useful Media and Communication course and said, “There were so many, but I’d say the most memorable and applicable classes to my career now would be all of my journalism classes; journalism 1, 2 and investigative journalism. Then my video production classes were so helpful in allowing to understand editing with Adobe premiere which I will be using in my job!”

Next up for our Spotlight Saturday is 2018 graduate, Kristian Hernandez. Kristian majored in Media & Communication and minored in Spanish. Not only was he a writer for The Griffin, but he was also involved with CHC-TV and even created his own sports show, “On the Hill with Hernandez.” Kristian now works at Sports Video Group as an associate editor and social media manager.

Kristian revealed that he always knew what he wanted to do, he described, “I always wanted to be involved in sports after watching my first episode of SportsCenter on ESPN when I was 8 years old. As I got older, I enjoyed the writing process and expressing my creativity through a story.”

He explained his most helpful class during his time at CHC was, “Research methods taught me how to think analytically and always dive deeper to get to the bottom of a subject.”

He discussed how the Media & Communication Department prepared him for his career by pointing out, “The Communication & Media department allowed me to cover games for all varsity sports at CHC and gave me the opportunity to start my own sports show, On the Hill with Hernandez, which helped me hone my strengths and work on my weaknesses.”

First up for our Spotlight Saturday is 2018 graduate, Emily Bensen-Abatangelo! She now works as an Operations Associate at Success Academy Charter Schools, while working on her Masters in Sports Industry and Management at Georgetown University. During her time at CHC, Emily majored in Media & Communication, wrote for The Griffin, and worked as an intern with the Athletics Department in social media.

Emily discussed her most useful Media & Communication courses and emphasized, “Gender and race in the media with Dr.Madison! This class gave me a new perspective, helped me form my thesis for my senior seminar paper and even helped me realize how I can make an impact in the world. Public relations and marketing also helped my transition to my career because I learned valuable lessons on campaigns and social media strategies that I use everyday at my job.”

When asked how the Media & Communication Program prepared her for her career, she explained, “I learned how to effectively and efficiently communicate with others. I learned valuable skills in working in teams, and how to conduct research that helped me in my every day job.”
