Words of pride and gratitude for NHCA staff: This past Wednesday, I walked into New Hope Christian Academy still carrying the exhaustion of jet lag, preparing for a school trip with our students. Then, in a moment, everything changed.

My husband, Kurt — who lovingly drives one of our school vans and prepares lunch for our students each day — suffered a medical emergency and had to be rushed to the hospital by ambulance.

I was scared.

The kind of scared that makes your heart drop into your stomach. The kind where your mind races in a hundred directions at once.

But in the midst of fear, panic, and chaos, the NHCA staff stepped in.

Quietly. Faithfully. Instinctively.

Teachers shifted roles without hesitation. The trip still went on. Lunch was served. Lessons continued. Children were cared for. Vans rolled out at dismissal. What could have become a disaster became calm because a group of people chose teamwork, grace, and love.

And honestly, that moment captured this entire school year.

This has been one of the hardest years in our 22-year history. Yet through every challenge, this staff has continued showing up for children and for one another — often unseen, often uncelebrated, and sometimes in the face of criticism that would make others walk away.

But you stayed.

You gave your time, your creativity, your patience, your prayers, your own resources, and pieces of your heart.

So on this last day of Teacher Appreciation Week, I simply want to say thank you.

You are not “just teachers.”You are lovers of children.Steady hands in hard moments.Light carriers.Difference makers.

And when I was scared this week, you carried more than responsibilities. You carried me, too.

I thank God for each and every one of you. ❤️

New episode of Let’s Talk About It with Born Again Buddy is here!

This week, Buddy learns a powerful lesson after hearing Pastor Kim say, “Life is like a race.”

But what does that really mean?

Does God want us to be the fastest?
Does He expect us to beat everyone else?

Through a loving conversation with PopPop, Buddy discovers that life isn’t about being better than everybody else — it’s about learning how to keep going, even when things get hard.

Using the Broad Street Run as an example, this episode teaches children:
• Everyone gets tired sometimes
• Some seasons are fast and exciting
• Some seasons are slow and difficult
• God gives us strength to keep moving forward
• We are never running alone

Based on Hebrews 12:1:
“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”

This episode is perfect for:
• Family devotion time
• Children’s ministry
• Sunday School
• Christian schools
• Parents encouraging children through difficult moments

Watch with your child this week and remind them:
You don’t have to be the best.
You just have to keep going.

✨ Introducing Let’s Talk About It with Born Again Buddy🧸✨

A new animated devotional series featuring Born Again Buddy and Pastor Williams as Pop-Pop, created to help children understand and grow in God’s Word.

We are also excited to share that the voice of Born Again Buddy is NHCA student Kendrick Richardson💛

Every Wednesday at 7 PM, we take the main message from Sunday’s sermon at New Hope and break it down in a way children can truly understand, grow from, and apply to their everyday lives.

As we continue our Philly Phenomenal Women series in celebration of Women’s History Month, we honor a woman whose leadership and compassion have helped strengthen families and communities throughout the city.

Sharmain Matlock-Turner is a respected nonprofit executive and the longtime President and CEO of the Urban Affairs Coalition in Philadelphia. Through her work, she has championed economic opportunity, workforce development, and initiatives that support underserved communities. Her leadership has helped connect public, private, and community partners to create pathways for growth and stability.

📖 “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2

Sharmain’s life reminds us that true leadership is rooted in service. She demonstrates that influence is not only about visibility but about impact. God often uses compassionate visionaries to build bridges where gaps once existed. When we commit ourselves to uplifting others, our work becomes a reflection of His love.

Philadelphia did not simply gain an executive leader. It was blessed with a woman committed to strengthening the foundation of its communities.

As we continue our Philly Phenomenal Women series in celebration of Women’s History Month, we honor a woman whose compassion and determination have helped restore dignity to countless lives in this city.

Mary Scullion is a social worker, advocate, and co-founder of Project HOME, an organization dedicated to ending homelessness in Philadelphia. Through decades of service, she has worked to provide housing, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities for individuals experiencing homelessness. Her leadership has helped transform vacant spaces into communities of hope and healing.

📖 “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” — Matthew 25:40

Mary’s life reminds us that compassion must move beyond intention into action. She demonstrates that lasting change often begins with seeing people through God’s eyes. Faith becomes visible when love is practical and persistent. God frequently uses willing hearts to rebuild broken places and restore forgotten dignity.

Philadelphia did not simply gain an advocate. It has been strengthened by a woman who chose to make mercy a daily mission.

As we continue our Philly Phenomenal Women series in celebration of Women’s History Month, we honor a woman whose medical leadership and public service continue to shape the future of this city.

Ala Stanford is a pediatric surgeon, author, and founder of the Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium in Philadelphia. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she mobilized healthcare professionals to provide testing, vaccines, and trusted medical information to underserved communities across the city, helping address critical disparities in healthcare access. She is now extending her commitment to service by seeking to represent her community through a campaign for Congress.

📖 “Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there?” — Jeremiah 8:22

Ala’s life reminds us that healing can take many forms. She has used her knowledge, compassion, and courage to meet urgent needs in both medicine and civic life. God often calls His people to step into new arenas of influence when their service is needed most. Faithful stewardship of one assignment can become preparation for another.

Philadelphia did not simply witness a public health leader in action. It continues to see a woman pursuing broader pathways to serve and uplift her community.

03/31/2026

As we continue our Philly Phenomenal Women series in celebration of Women’s History Month, we honor a woman who broke political barriers and helped reshape leadership in Pennsylvania.

Roxanne H. Jones was the first Black woman elected to the Pennsylvania State Senate, representing Philadelphia with a deep commitment to equity, opportunity, and community empowerment. Rising from grassroots activism and public service, she became a strong advocate for education, economic development, and fair representation. Her historic election marked a defining moment in the political life of both the city and the Commonwealth.

📖 “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.” — Proverbs 31:8

Roxanne’s life reminds us that leadership is a sacred trust. She used her position to amplify voices that were often overlooked and to pursue meaningful change. God often raises courageous leaders to stand in difficult spaces and challenge injustice. When purpose is greater than personal comfort, influence becomes a tool for transformation.

Philadelphia did not simply elect a senator. It was led by a woman who understood that representation is a responsibility.
