Vince Leve, a member of LU #1856 and a member of the 1964 JAC graduating class, visited the school yesterday to make sure the present students were heading down the proper path. Vince joined the fourth-year Drywall Production class to share some quick trade tricks and advice.
We are grateful to all our retired members.
They established the foundation for what is occurring presently. We can only begin to comprehend what we must do to ensure the future of those who will come after us by appreciating the accomplishments and sacrifices made by those who came before us.
Thank you again Vince and all our retirees for your continued dedication to this organization!

As our country gears up to enjoy this Labor Day weekend with our friends and family, it is important to reflect, and ask, why are we celebrating this national holiday. As a nation, our workforce takes a backseat to none, but is important to know that we had help getting to where we are now by some very influential people.
Sir Isaac Newton said it best, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants”. Our Workforce has been able to continuously progress, not by virtue of any sharpness of sight on our part, or any physical distinction, but because we are carried high and raised up by the great achievements of those that came before us.
One individual that deserves the utmost respect and recognition is Peter J. McGuire. He was an American labor leader of the nineteenth century. He co-founded the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America in 1881. He is credited with first proposing the idea of Labor Day as a national holiday in 1882.
Labor Day is not exclusively a union holiday, but without organized labor, the holiday would not exist. Nor would many of the rights you enjoy today. The labor movement is largely responsible for federal law that protects workers' rights to come together and collectively bargain with their employer. Prior to this right, employers often vigorously resisted workers joining together. Sometimes this resistance was violent or deadly.
The Labor Movement was sparked by inhumane working conditions and practices during the Industrial Revolution. Poor and working-class people were forced to work 12-hour days, seven days per week, in mostly dangerous working conditions, with little to no training. It became abundantly clear that working conditions and lack of quality training caused an uprising that eventually led to changes, including the 40-hour work week, a minimum wage, paid vacation, paid sick leave, and more.
The sacrifices made by the American worker, and Revolutionaries like P.J. McGuire are what led to establishment of registered apprenticeship programs. For almost a century, the concept of registered apprenticeship programs has remained the same. Apprentices learn a trade and how to work safely from their more experienced counterparts. Today, apprenticeships are seen as a direct pathway to the middle class, creating an attainable life with better pay and benefits. Instead of taking on tens of thousands of dollars in student debt by going to college, apprentices earn a livable wage, allowing them to support themselves and their families from day one.
A Heartfelt thankyou to P.J. McGuire, the Co-Founder of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Proposer of Labor Day, and early adopter of modern worker’s rights which led to registered Apprenticeship programs.
Have a safe and Happy Labor Day!
