This summer camp was truly special! 🌍✨
We designed our courses based on teaching materials created by our founder, Emily, during her journey with the Taiwan Global Pathfinder Initiative in Philadelphia.

Through three key topics—
💡 Humanitarian Care: The Stories of Migration and Refugees
🤖 The Future of Technology: Humans and Robots
🌍 Environmental Sustainability: Our Planet Has a Fever

Our campers not only explored global issues but also learned from Emily’s international exchange experiences in the U.S. We hope these lessons inspire our young leaders to care more, think deeper, and dream bigger for the world. 🌈

📍Bridging Cities Through Stories | PHLCVB Meeting

🌟 Meeting with the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB)
As the final meeting I hosted on this trip, we explored ways to promote cultural exchange between Philadelphia and Taiwan. Our discussion covered showcasing Philly’s arts, sports, education, and cuisine to Taiwanese audiences.

One of my favorite moments was sharing an idea to bridge the two cities through film. Philadelphia’s Rocky series is an iconic cultural symbol, just like Taiwan’s Spirited Away connection to Jiufen. By drawing these parallels, we can create a cinematic bridge that deepens mutual understanding and sparks cultural curiosity.

🌍 Culture is more than heritage—it’s a shared language we can speak across borders.

📍Trade, Culture & Soundscapes | A Day in Philadelphia

🌟 Meeting with the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Commerce
We had the honor of visiting the Department of Commerce to explore how Philly and Taiwan could strengthen trade. Each of us proposed creative import-export ideas—I shared the fusion of Taiwan’s high-quality agriculture with Philly’s culinary culture. We also learned about Philly’s innovations in gene therapy and tech.

🌟 Asian American Chamber of Commerce
In the afternoon, we met with Khine Arthur and Kelvin Zhang from the Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia. They spoke about empowering Asian American businesses and shared personal stories in leadership and cultural identity.
We also met Nicole Gordon, founder of Nikigo—a soy-free soy sauce brand—and got to sample her product while hearing her inspiring entrepreneurial journey.

🌟 Meeting with the Philadelphia Orchestra
Despite the heavy rain, we made it to our visit with the Philadelphia Orchestra! Inside the theater, we learned how its architecture enhances musical resonance. We also toured the members’ lounge and discovered each musician has a personalized mug.
As a Broadway lover, I was thrilled to hear about the Orchestra’s special Broadway-themed concerts!

🌍 These encounters remind us that culture, commerce, and creativity are deeply connected—and young leaders have the power to shape them all.

📍Taiwan Night in Philly | Cultural Diplomacy in Action

One of the most exciting highlights of our trip—Taiwan Night—took place this evening, and I was honored to be part of it!

🎯 I was in charge of the RSVP desk and our interactive pinball game, which brought many curious guests over to learn more about Taiwan. It was such a rewarding experience to speak with people from all walks of life—sponsors from Asian Bank, friends from the WAC Youth Leadership Seminar, and Philly locals interested in Taiwan.

🌸 I also gave a short presentation on Taiwanese art and performed a traditional fan dance in cultural attire. From temple murals to vibrant street art and intricate handicrafts, I introduced the rich visual language of Taiwan.

✨ The night was a huge success. Seeing so many guests engage with Taiwan’s culture reminds me why cultural exchange is such a powerful tool for connection.

📍【Taiwan Night|

📍Dialogue, Decisions, and Community Power | Philly Reflections

🌟 Meeting with PA State Rep. Rick Krajewski
At a local spot called The Greek Lady, we had an open conversation with State Representative Rick Krajewski. We discussed the rising housing prices in Philadelphia and across Pennsylvania. I proposed potential solutions—like implementing policies that prevent rent hikes from disproportionately affecting immigrants and low-income families.

🌟 A Conversation on Trade-offs at Wharton
We had the privilege of meeting Prof. Bruce Zou at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. As we talked about education and psychology, one theme stood out: trade-offs. Every choice comes with opportunity costs. How do we make the “right” decision? That’s where self-awareness and long-term thinking come in. A powerful, reflective moment.

🌟 Community Leadership with Asian Americans United
Today, I hosted our session with Asian Americans United (AAU). Director Ms. Vivian Chang and Civic Engagement Lead Mr. Wei Chen shared stories of advocacy, from founding the FACTS school to empowering Asian immigrant youth in Philadelphia.
I also interviewed both leaders, asking how they would encourage students like me to raise our voices and create lasting impact. Their answers were bold, grounded, and full of heart.

🌏 These conversations reminded us that leadership is about listening deeply, thinking critically, and standing up for our communities—at home and abroad.

📍Exploring Civic Engagement & Global Trade | Philadelphia Insights

Our delegation continued our journey of learning and connection in the heart of Philadelphia.

🌟 City Hall Visit
We met with city commissioners and discussed how voter turnout often spikes in presidential elections but drops in local ones. This sparked important reflections on civic education and local participation.
We also spoke with Councilman Mark Squilla about opportunities for cultural exchange between Philadelphia and Taiwan—built on shared values and mutual respect.

🌟 World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia
Trade isn’t just economic—it’s cultural. At the World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia, we discussed how Philly and Taiwan could collaborate through import-export opportunities.
My idea? Combine Philly soft pretzels with Taiwanese Sun Moon Lake black tea—a taste of diplomacy through food.

🌍Every visit reinforces The Turning Point’s mission: empowering young people to think globally, act locally, and lead with vision.

📍World Affairs Council Leadership Seminar | Day 4–5 Highlights

🌟 Day 4 — Crisis Simulation & Community Visit
We tackled a crisis simulation on nuclear proliferation, representing the peacekeeping nation of Terranova. While no agreement was reached, it sparked powerful debate and team collaboration.

In the afternoon, we visited the Chinese Benevolent Association and spoke with Ms. Mabel Chi Chan. Her story—rooted in service, leadership, and identity—reminded us that giving back is just as important as personal success.

🌟 Day 5 — DC Bound: Diplomacy in Action
Off to Washington, D.C. for my first visit! We stopped by the EU Delegation to learn how the Union functions across nations. Then at Sister Cities International, we saw how cities like Yilan and Leawood strengthen friendship—through events like a bubble milk tea festival!

🌍 These experiences reflect what The Turning Point stands for: youth stepping up as global citizens, ready to connect, learn, and lead.

📍【World Affairs Council 青年領袖營|Day 4–5 精彩回顧】

(EU Delegation to the US),了解歐盟如何協調各成員國的政策與內部運作。

📍World Affairs Council Youth Leadership Seminar|Day 1–3 Highlights

As we reach day 3 of the leadership seminar, I’ve been deeply engaged in discussions and activities with youth leaders from around the world. From diplomacy to debate, every day is an opportunity to better understand how we can connect across cultures and contribute to a more peaceful world.

🌟 Day 1 – Understanding Conflict & Communication
We kicked off with interactive icebreakers and explored how each of us approaches conflict. It was a great way to reflect on how we respond to differences—and how that awareness can help us collaborate in diverse international settings.

🌟 Day 2 – Sister Cities & Cultural Ties
We learned about sister cities—how two cities can build partnerships through shared culture or history. Our group proposed Kyiv, Ukraine as a potential sister city for Philadelphia, given the city’s strong Ukrainian-American presence and international relevance.

🌟 Day 3 – Debate & Cultural Immersion
We joined a lively debate on whether the UN Security Council’s veto power should be abolished. My team argued against abolition—and we won! Later, we visited the American Swedish Museum and explored Sweden’s neutral stance in global conflicts, and how cultural diplomacy plays a role in peacebuilding.

🌏 For The Turning Point, this experience is more than just a camp—it’s a live classroom for global citizenship. Can’t wait to share more from the remaining two days!

📍【World Affairs Council 青年領袖Day 1–3 】

Hello everyone!
Leaving my hometown and stepping onto the international stage has always been my dream—and the Global Pathfinders Initiative made it come true!
I’m Emily Liao, founder of The Turning Point. After representing Taiwan as one of the nation’s teen Diplomats, I participated in the Ministry of Education’s “global pathfinders initiative” this March. Following a rigorous selection process including a written proposal and final interview, I was honored to be selected as one of only five youth leaders nationwide to receive full government sponsorship for an international leadership exchange program in Philadelphia, USA.
As someone deeply passionate about international affairs and diplomacy, I was beyond excited and truly inspired by this opportunity.
During this exchange, I will visit various international organizations, think tanks, and governmental offices, engaging in discussions on global issues with leaders from institutions such as:
• World Affairs Council of Philadelphia
• Philadelphia City Hall
• Philadelphia Congress Hall
• Philadelphia Department of Commerce
• Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC) Philadelphia
Through these visits, I hope to contribute my experience in international engagement, learn from professionals, and exchange ideas as a young leader from Taiwan. I also aim to showcase the competence and confidence of Taiwan’s youth on the global stage.
I’ll be sharing insights from my trip—offering you a first-hand look at Philadelphia, one of the most historic cities in the U.S. Stay tuned!
