During quarantine, lawyers faced increased workloads that resulted in high levels of burnout which led to a portion of lawyers leaving their practices or looking for a change in the industry. To address this need, The National Law Review suggests a focus on collaboration technology to lessen pressure on lawyers and automate the monotonous parts of their job.

Secondments solve a corporate law department’s temporary need for high-quality counsel to alleviate leaves of absence or significant increases in legal work. In her article "Reimagining the Secondment Experience" Penn Law alumni Kate Driscoll L'11 discusses her experience as a secondee and how corporate legal departments and law firms can deploy secondments more strategically.

In a recent Wharton study, researchers studied the correlation between factory turnover rate and product failure. They found that replacing a worker with someone with an identical skill set wasn't sufficient and led to more product failures. In the legal industry, turnover can be detrimental to company structure and output. Wharton Professor Ken Moon emphasizes that managers need to address the root of why employees leave, and make changes to improve retention in order to succeed.
